October 8, 2014, Wednesday - Approaching the Gate: Lynette Reini-Grandell at The Loft

Time: 7:00pm

Location: The Loft at Open Book (Performance Hall), 1011 Washington Ave S

Approaching the Gate: Lynette Reini-Grandell

Lynette Reini-Grandell’s long-anticipated debut collection of poetry quickens with forward movement, be it in a car that pushes towards the stars—or with a horse that suddenly spooks, leaving the speaker “knocked down, / breathless, / turning to the sight of a thousand-pound horse/ rushing the gate / and leaping over my head.” Several of the poems probe the experience of her grandparents who emigrated from Finland and settled on a farm in northern Minnesota in the early 20th century. The urge to move forward is matched with a deep love and reverence for creatures living in their natural world, for the buzz of the city, for unmet ancestors and kindred spirits, and most especially for her transgender husband.

October Sip of Science - The Secret Life of a Tweet with Joanne Richardson, River Life, University of Minnesota

The rise of social media such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter enables people to communicate information instantaneously, whether it be a breaking news story, interesting video, or personal updates. While some of the content and contributions from social media users may have us rolling our eyes, the information conveyed through these media portals connects individuals and organizations who may not have connected otherwise. For example, social media is increasingly bringing good science to a wide, interested, and influential audience. Join us at the October Sip of Science as we use a case studies approach to explore the communications of a well-regarded academic scientist to explore the knowledge ecologies of social media communications.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Joanne Richardson is the digital information strategist for the University of Minnesota’s River Life program. Her undergraduate work at the University of Minnesota focused on geology, architecture, computer science and French, and she received a master’s degree in landscape architecture from the College of Design. Having spent many childhood weekends and holidays backpacking through many of the great American landscapes, she developed an early and lasting love of geology that has colored her interests ever since. She has a particular interest in digital media, strategic communications, and responsive design.

October 3, 2014, Friday - Live Music at Aster Cafe

Time: 9:00pm $10

Location: Aster Cafe, 125 Main Stree SE

Tonight: Shiny Lights + Lucy Michelle solo

If experience was gold, The Shiny Lights would be rich. One of the more promising new bands to pop out of the always crowded music scene in Minnesota – aka The Land of 10000 bands – in 2010, The Shiny Lights have about a century’s worth of collective experience behind them, something that is immediately evident when you hear the inspired pop/rock on their self-titled debut EP. Equally adept at up-tempo rockers and delicate pop craft – and most everything in between – this is a band that clearly is serious about its business.

Lucy Michelle is a songwriter as serious as they come. Twin Cities natives will know her as frontwoman of gypsy-pop outfit Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles, a raucous and eclectic six-piece. At home and on the road, Lucy has stood boldly amidst that chugging whirlwind of cello and accordion, stomping her foot and singing out fiercely over the top of it all. It’s a collaboration five years strong whose catalogue reveals an artist developing not only her craft, but also personally.

October 2, 2014, Thursday - Arena Dances presents: The Main Street Project at Southern Theater (4 nights)

Time: (see schedule below)

Location: Southern Theater, 1420 Washington Avenue South

Arena Dances presents: The Main Street Project October 2 – 5

The Main Street Project explores how current attitudes, relationships and habits have changed in an information-driven technological world by utilizing integrative forms of media – juxtaposing visceral and explosive movement with electro/techno/pop music, folk-inspired songs and projections of filmed interviews with people from diverse communities and backgrounds. The work illuminates themes of isolation and belonging in contemporary society to ask the question, does “Main Street” still exist? The Main Street Project is informed by ARENA’s Intergenerational Residency Program, which utilizes community outreach between youth and elder communities to create dialogue about topics such as home, community and connection. Local photographers Jake Armour, Keri Pickett and Wing Yung Huie will reveal their perspective on community as part of The Main Street Project’s premiere. In collaboration with Minneapolis Art on Wheels, these photos will be projected on the exterior wall of the Southern Theater and surfaces across the city. The unveiling ceremony will take place on September 15, 6 – 9 pm, at the Marriott Courtyard in downtown Minneapolis.
