April 16, 2015, Thursday - 'Citizen Swain: Tales from a Minnesota Life' Discussion and Book Signing

Authors Tom H. Swain and Lori Sturdevant to discuss and sign copies of their new book Citizen Swain: Tales from a Minnesota Life--5:00-7:00 PM, Thursday, April 16th, Humphrey School of Public Affairs (301 19th Avenue S. Minneapolis, MN 55455 ). The event is open to the public.

5:00-6:00 PM: Reception and book signing
6:00-7:00 PM: Program, Q&A with Tom H. Swain and Lori Sturdevant
Please RSVP to: http://swainbooklaunch.eventbrite.com/ or call 612-625-5309 to register.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
For an insider’s take on the past eighty years in Minnesota history, sit down with Tom H. Swain’s memoir. It is a personal look at the people and events that shaped the state, written by a civic and business leader—and a true public servant—with a genuine knack for telling a story. From business to athletics, politics to education, Swain is a key player. He’s been a mayor, a University of Minnesota vice president, a chief of staff to former Minnesota governor Elmer L. Andersen, and a member and chair of numerous nonprofit and civic boards. In Citizen Swain: Tales from a Minnesota Life, he eloquently relates his vibrant presence and meaningful contributions, giving readers a rare glimpse into the inner workings of institutions and their leaders.

Swain was more than a witness to state history: he helped make it happen. Readers learn what it was like to be a part of Governor Andersen’s administration—including details about the dramatic vote recount that ended his term. Swain’s dedication to education and sports shine through as he speaks of his service at the University of Minnesota. Over the years in positions ranging from ticket manager in the athletic department to vice president, Swain knew Gopher coach Bernie Bierman and three University of Minnesota presidents—Nils Hasselmo, Mark Yudof, and Robert Bruininks. Twenty-three years at the St. Paul Companies gave him profound insight into the state’s oldest corporation.

Whether he’s describing the hard work behind the scenes of the massive civic celebration of the state’s centennial or growing up in 1930s and 1940s Minneapolis, Swain’s passion for making Minnesota a better place comes through in these remembrances, told with warmth, respect, and not a small amount of wit. Citizen Swain will be an inspiration to anyone seeking to make positive change through active citizenship.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS:
Tom H. Swain has a résumé, stretching back six decades, full of notable contributions to higher education, politics, corporate affairs, and health care. He is the recipient of numerous local and national awards, including an honorary doctor of law degree from the University of Minnesota, an award from the National Governors Association, and an Outstanding Achievement Award from the University of Minnesota.

Lori Sturdevant is an editorial writer and columnist for the Minneapolis–St. Paul Star Tribune. Her many book collaborations include A Man’s Reach by former Minnesota governor Elmer L. Andersen (Minnesota, 2000). She is the author of Her Honor: Rosalie Wahl and the Minnesota Women’s Movement and The Pillsburys of Minnesota.

April 16, 2015, Thursday - Grand Opening Celebration of The Grain Belt Apartments and Historic Grain Belt Office Building

Time: 3:00pm - 4:30pm

Location: The Grain Belt Apartments, 1215 Marshall Street NE

On Thursday, April 16, 2015, Everwood Development will celebrate the grand opening of The Grain Belt Apartments and historic Grain Belt Office Building.  The celebration will begin at 3:00 p.m. with a brief program including comments from Everwood co-founder and principal David Dye, Ward 3 Council Member Jacob Frey, and City staff.

The Grain Belt development is significant to the City of Minneapolis as the site was the last City-owned historic Grain Belt building to be developed.   In 1977, the City saved the one hundred twenty-four year old brewing complex from demolition by designating it as a Landmark and subsequently purchasing the property in 1989, one year before it was listed in the National Register of Historic Places.  Since then, the City has worked with local developers and the State Office of Historic Preservation to secure capital, and to rehabilitate and reinvigorate the brewery complex, which now includes architectural offices, Park Board facilities, a public library branch, a union office, and artist studios.  The Grain Belt Office Building located at 1215 Marshall Street NE was the last portion of the complex to receive this treatment.  Through the Everwood development of The Grain Belt Apartments and Office Building, this historic renovation is now complete.

The Everwood development also preserves the archaeological remnants of the City’s first (and the state’s second) brewery: the Orth Brewery, whose remains have been capped and protected by a public plaza at the corner of Marshall Street and 13th Avenue NE.

Following the grand opening program, attendees will have the opportunity to tour the newly remodeled historic Office Building and The Grain Belt luxury apartments.  The apartments are housed in two, four-story apartment buildings totaling 220,514 sq. ft.  Of the 150 apartment units, 120 have already been leased.  A reception with light refreshments and music will go until 4:30 p.m.

For more information on The Grain Belt visit their website.

PUBLIC HEARING

A public hearing regarding the proposed Minneapolis Sculpture Garden Reconstruction (726 Vineland Place, Mpls, 55403) is planned for 6:30 pm on Wednesday, April 15, 2015, at the MPRB Headquarters, 2117 West River Road North, Minneapolis.  If approved, the plan is for construction to begin August 2015 with completion in spring of 2017. Time:  5:30p-7:30p

Location: Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, 2117 West River Road

Community Advisory Committee meeting will be held on April 14 and is open to the public.

The fourth meeting of the Community Advisory Committee (CAC) for the Ecological System Plan will be held Tuesday, April 14, 5:30-7:30, at the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, 2117 West River Road, Minneapolis. The public is welcome to attend and will have the opportunity to comment.

The purpose of this meeting will be:

  • To discuss and plan upcoming community events during the summer of 2015
  • To review the status of data gathering and research

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) and the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization (MWMO) are preparing the first-ever Ecological System Plan. The Ecological System Plan will seek to first understand the ecology of the city and watershed, then plan for parks and public lands management and improvements that benefit both humans and nature. It will address specific threats such as climate change, decreasing water quality, explosion of invasive species, increasing runoff, and fragmentation of habitat. It will envision a more environmentally sound way of managing the impacts of the city, so that the city can be cleaner, greener, cooler, and more efficient.

In addition to attending this and other upcoming CAC meetings, the public may provide input and stay informed about the project in the following ways:

Visit the project website to stay up to date on the project and see some of the amazing maps and drawings we plan to create. Click here and select “Ecological System Plan.”

  • Attend any of the planned community events that will take place in the parks over the next year and a half. More details will be made available on the project website and by govdelivery as these events are scheduled and planned.
  • Sign up to receive e-mail updates by subscribing on the project website or at www.minneapolisparks.org/subscribe or, if you are already a subscriber, by adding “Ecological System Plan” to your subscription preferences.
