June 6, 2015, Saturday - The Lost Gateway District of Minneapolis: Walking Tour with Preserve Minneapolis
Time: 10:00am
Location: Tour meets outside The Gay '90s, 408 Hennepin Avenue
During the early twentieth century, the Gateway, also known as the Lower Loop, was the largest skid row in the Upper Midwest. The seedy stretch included flophouses, missions, and bars with a mish-mash of respectable businesses that needed cheap rents and a central location. Between 1959 and 1963 the City of Minneapolis demolished 25 blocks in an effort to clean up the area — almost 40 percent of its historic downtown. This vibrant part of the city was reduced to a wasteland of surface parking lots.
Revisit the history of the Gateway District and its redevelopment and learn about current proposals to return street life to this formerly bustling area.
This tour will walk about 1.5 miles. The tour guides are Kirsten Delegard and James Eli Shiffer.
