May 22, 2016, Sunday - Art-a-Whirl talk with Jamies Eli Shiffer at A-Mill Artist Lofts

Time: 1:00pm - 3:00pm

Location: A-Mill Artist Lofts, Performance Hall, 315 Main Street NE

Author James Eli Shiffer will discuss and sign copies of his new book The King of Skid Row: John Bacich and the Twilight Years of Old Minneapolis.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
City blue laws drove the liquor trade and its customers—hard-drinking lumberjacks, pensioners, farmhands, and railroad workers—into the oldest quarter of Minneapolis. In the fifty-cent-a-night flophouses of the city’s Gateway District, they slept in cubicles with ceilings of chicken wire. In rescue missions, preachers and nuns tried to save their souls. Sociology researchers posing as vagrants studied them. And in their midst John Bacich, aka Johnny Rex, who owned a bar, a liquor store, and a cage hotel, documented the gritty neighborhood’s last days through photographs and film of his clientele.

The King of Skid Row follows Johnny Rex into this vanished world that once thrived in the heart of Minneapolis. Drawing on hours of interviews conducted in the three years before Bacich’s death in 2012, James Eli Shiffer brings to life the eccentric characters and strange events of an American skid row. Supplemented with archival and newspaper research and his own photographs, Bacich’s stories recreate the violent, alcohol-soaked history of a city best known for its clean, progressive self-image. His life captures the seamy, richly colorful side of the city swept away by a massive urban renewal project in the early 1960s and gives us, in a glimpse of those bygone days, one of Minneapolis’s most intriguing figures—spinning some of its most enduring and enthralling tales.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
James Eli Shiffer has been a professional journalist for twenty-five years and is currently a columnist and editor at the Minneapolis–St. Paul Star Tribune. In 2010 he partnered with Ewen Media to create Rubbed Out, a multimedia history of the murder of a journalist in Minneapolis in 1945.

May 21, 2016, Saturday - Native Shrub and Wildflower Planting with Friends of the Mississippi River

Time: 9:00am - 11:00am

Location: Mississippi River Gorge, Minneapolis

Join Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR) to Plant native shrubs and wildflowers in the Oak Savanna

Just off the main path along the Minneapolis riverfront lies a surprisingly beautiful and rare oak savanna and woodlands. This area includes the highest quality plant communities remaining in the River Gorge, including a mesic prairie and a remnant oak brushland/woodland undergoing restoration to oak savanna.

For years, it has been carefully tended by River Gorge Stewards volunteers. Coming from both the community and the larger metro area, volunteers have completed much of the habitat restoration work, including removing and managing the invasive species (such as buckthorn) that formerly dominated this site.

At this event, volunteers will work closely with FMR ecologist Alex Roth and local River Gorge Steward ecologist Carolyn Carr to plant native shrubs, trees and wildflowers where there was once invasive buckthorn. The native plants will provide habitat — for birds, bees, butterflies and other wildlife — and help filter pollution from runoff waters before it can enter the Mississippi River.

Tools and gloves will be provided. Shovels and trowels will be in use, but children are welcome with a parent or guardian.

May 21, 2016, Saturday - Art-a-Whirl talk with R.T. Rybak for POTHOLE CONFIDENTIAL at A-Mill Artist Lofts

Time: 1:00pm - 3:00pm

Location: A-Mill Artist Lofts, 315 Main Street NE

Art-a-Whirl talk with R.T. Rybak for POTHOLE CONFIDENTIAL

R.T. Rybak will be at the A-Mill Artists Lofts on Saturday, May 21st, at 1:00 PM for a talk about Pothole Confidential: My Life as Mayor of Minneapolis as part of Art-a-Whirl.

In a memoir that is at once a political coming-of-age story and a behind-the-scenes look at the running of a great city, three-term Minneapolis mayor R.T. Rybak takes readers into the highs and lows and the daily drama of a life inextricably linked with the city over the past fifty years. Pothole Confidential is that rare document from a politician: one more concerned with the people he served and the issues of his time than with burnishing his own credentials.

Archer is a sex-toy heir. His best friend, John, is as earnest as Archer is feckless. John’s girlfriend, Sara, writes Archer’s semi-celebrated novels for him. Happy Hour with a Preservationist is back and we are thrilled to share with you an incredible preservation story. From its 1887 construction as a grand Queen Anne-style mansion to its substantial renovation in 1906 transforming it to a breathtaking Georgian Revival, the home at 300 Clifton has been everything from a single-family residence, multi-family complex, bustling office building and, most recently, a lovingly restored Bed & Breakfast. Join us as we tour the Bradstreet-designed interior and learn about the effort that left this grand-mansion standing, even as urban renewal projects razed its neighbors.
