July 17, 2016, Sunday - Milwaukee Avenue Historic District Walking Tour with Preserve Minneapolis

Time: 10:00am

Location: Meet at Milwaukee Avenue and East Franklin Avenue

Milwaukee Avenue Historic District Walking Tour with Preserve Minneapolis

In the late 19th century, the narrow street that became Milwaukee Avenue served as the first home in Minneapolis for immigrant families of Northern European workers who labored in the nearby Milwaukee Railroad yards and industrial shops.

A 1970s public agency’s renewal plan called for demolishing approximately 70% of the houses in the 35 block Seward West neighborhood, including all of the houses on Milwaukee Avenue. However, a neighborhood organization, the Seward West Project Area Committee (PAC), thwarted that plan, instead established rehabilitation of the houses as a principal development tool. PAC’s research led to Milwaukee Avenue’s local and national historic district designation.

The neighborhood organization’s 1970s redevelopment process rehabilitated 34 of the original 46 houses facing the street, and converted the once narrow street into a landscaped pedestrian walkway. The street’s unique architectural character renders a human scale quite different from the surrounding neighborhood. Milwaukee Avenue was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The tour will walk 1/4 mile. The tour guide is Bob Roscoe.

July 14, 2016, Thursday - A Hill in Natchez at Southern Theater (4 nights)

Time: 7:30pm

Location: Southern Theater, 1420 Washington Avenue South

A Hill in Natchez presented by Joseph Horton

Beautiful and unsettling, A Hill in Natchez is a meditation on the strange gravity of power that transforms a scenic hill into a bazaar where people stroll idly past humans for sale. Through a hallucinatory mix of music, visuals, and dance, director Joe Horton tells the story of a woman and man caught in this gravity and the myriad ways they are touched by power. Seen through their eyes, the New World is an ever-evolving mosaic of symbols, violent and seductive, dictating laws they are bound by yet can't quite understand.
.
Preview on Thursday, June 14th:  Live Filming
Thursday's presentation of A Hill in Natchez will double as a live taping. The film team will make every effort to be as unobtrusive as possible to give audience members an unbroken experience. Tickets to the live taping are available at a special discounted price.

July 13, 2016, Wednesday - Warehouse District Walking Tour with Preserve Minneapolis

Time: 6:30pm

Location: Meet at Edina Realty Office - Corner of Washington Avenue N and 3rd Avenue N

Minneapolis Warehouse District Walking Tour with Preserve Minneapolis

The Minneapolis Warehouse Historic District is the state's largest commercial district listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  Spread over a 30 block area, the district includes 140 buildings and structures.  The district is historically important as an area of early commercial growth during the development of the city of Minneapolis and as the city's warehouse and wholesaling district that expanded during the late 19th and early 20th centuries when Minneapolis became a major distribution center in the upper Midwest.  Wholesalers were attracted to the area northwest of the downtown business district where land values were relatively low and railroad lines nearby.  The leading wholesale lines included groceries, fruits and produce, hardware, dry goods, glassware, and most importantly, agricultural implements.

The district is also architecturally significant for its remarkably intact concentration of commercial buildings designed by the city's leading architects including Cass Gilbert, Long and Long, Harry Wild Jones, Kees and Colburn, and Hewitt and Brown.  Stylistically, the buildings represent every major style from the period including Italianate, Queen Anne, Richardsonian Romanesque, Renaissance Revival, and the Commercial Style.

The warehouse district has retained its sense of time and place with original bridges still in place, streets paved with bricks, and with trains passing through daily on the tracks beds around which the area first developed. The tour will discuss the overall history of the district, the history and architectural styles of individual buildings, and the architects who designed them.

The tour will walk one mile. The tour guide is Rolf Anderson.

July 13, 2016, Wednesday - Friends of the Mississippi River presents Brown Bag Lunch: Reconnecting North Minneapolis to the Mighty Mississippi

Time: 11:30am – 1:00pm

Location: McKnight Foundation, 710 Second Street S., #400

Friends of the Mississippi River presents:

Brown Bag Lunch: Reconnecting North Minneapolis to the Mighty Mississippi

With the Mississippi Riverfront in North Minneapolis slated to become parkland in the coming years, it's important to ensure that it be a true, accessible, community amenity for North Minneapolis residents. To do this, connections between the community and the riverfront parkland must be improved. Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR) invites you to a brown bag lunch for a presentation and discussion about the barriers and opportunities to reconnect North Minneapolis neighborhoods and the Mississippi River. The lunch will include a presentation by FMR’s's UMN CURA Research Assistant Eric King on his connections research throughout the spring 2016 semester. A discussion about the existing barriers and opportunities as well as projects that are in the works to improve connections will follow. Beverages and dessert provided. Please RSVP using the above link.
