August 4 , 2016, Thursday - Dinkytown: A Living History Walking Tour with Preserve Minneapolis

Time: 6:00pm - 7:30pm

Location: Meet at NE corner of University Ave and 14 th Ave SE

Dinkytown: A Living History Walking Tour with Preserve Minneapolis

Event Description

John Pillsbury’s decision to locate the University of Minnesota on the eastern bank of the Mississippi River set the stage for Dinkytown’s destiny as a dynamic commercial district that has  inspired generations of people to explore new ideas and try out new personas. This tour will explore Dinkytown’s early commercial years, signature buildings, legacy businesses, and its role in the student protests of the 1960s. Because of its proximity to the U of M, Dinkytown has always been undergoing change and rebirth, subject to the winds of change and forces of urban growth and decline, with fears that it will be irreparably changed. Yet, with each new generation, it revives itself, as each fall, like the seasons, a new set of students, faculty, and staff pass through here on their way to the University, both simultaneously leaving its mark on Dinkytown as well as being marked by it.

This tour walks half a mile, and the tour guide is Cara Letofsky.

August 4, 2016, Thursday - Minnesota Fringe Festival opens (runs thru August 14)

Multiple venues, including Southern Theater, Rarig Center, Mill City Museum and Stone Arch Bridge

There is one big thing that makes Fringe different from any other event in town: All the shows you'll see at Fringe were selected randomly. Yep. That's right. Each year organizers select the lineup by placing numbered ping-pong balls into a bingo cage and pulling them out, one by one. They believe everyone has the capability to make great art, and -- more importantly -- everyone should get their chance to try. From stage veterans to people who are brand new to theater, Minnesota Fringe is a forum for anyone with a story to tell and provides the support to make producing a show as easy as possible.

Schedule Grid

To use the schedule to its full schedule-y potential, log into your account on fringefestival.org. You can then start favorite-ing and locking in shows to create your own customized itinerary. When you’re ready to head out to the festival, you can easily access your personalized schedule on your phone or print it out at home ahead of time. Either way, you’ll be prepared for whatever a day at the Fringe throws your way.

Advance Ticket Sales

With the switch to day passes, it’s super simple to save a seat at that show you’re just dying to see. There are two options: “Reserve” and “Reserve with a wristband. For your first show of the day, we’d suggest the “Reserve with a wristband” option to save your seat and purchase your day pass all at once. It'll save you a trip to the box office at the festival, which is pretty snazzy. Then you can use plain old “Reserve” for everything else.

Button Deals

You don’t have to buy a 2016 Fringe button, but you might just want to. Your $4 button gets you awesome deals at a bunch of local bars and restaurants during the 11 days of the festival. You’ll be able to buy 2016 Fringe buttons at Fringe Preview events and at any Fringe venue during the festival.

August 2, 2016, Tuesday - 72 Stretch Beer Release Party at Fulton Taproom

Time: 5pm - 10pm

Location: Fulton Taproom, 414 N 6th Avenue

Join Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR)at Fulton Taproom on Tuesday, August 2, beginning at 5 p.m. to celebrate the release of 72 Stretch, a limited-edition Fulton gose brew benefiting FMR.

Made in collaboration with Fulton Beer, Rahr Corporation and Bob Mitchell's Fly Shop, this special brew honors the 72 miles of the Mississippi River flowing through the Twin Cities metro. Home to our local national park, the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, this 72-mile stretch also serves as the sole source of drinking water for nearly one in three metro residents. Plus, Mississippi River water is the number one ingredient in brews from Minneapolis!

In recognition of the river's importance to our health, culture and industry, $1 from each pint of 72 Stretch will support FMR's work to protect, restore and enhance the river for everyone.

In addition to great beer, the launch party will feature fly casting tips from the owners of Bob Mitchell's Fly Shop, specially produced river-themed artwork by Jake Keeler and screenings of FMR's documentary, 'Rebirth,' on the little-known story behind the hard-won designation of our local Mississippi River national park. FMR staff and friends will be there to answer questions on river health and to share actions that all of us can take to protect the Big River.

72 Stretch will be available only in Fulton Taproom, while supplies last. Check it out before it's gone!

Our collaboration with Fulton Beer, Rahr Malting and Bob Mitchell's Fly Shop came together with the simple idea that you can't make great beer without great water. Earlier this year, we launched greatrivergreatbeer.com to raise awareness and support for the river. 72 Stretch is our first project together.

This event is free, open to the public (ages 21+) and no registration is required! For questions or more information, please contact FMR Development Officer John Briel at jbriel@fmr.org.

On this tour, a Mill City Museum guide will lead participants to Hennepin Island and Father Hennepin Bluffs Park, including special access to the power plant. Along the way, participants will learn about the historic uses of waterpower at the falls for flour milling, sawmilling and hydroelectricity, the role of hydroelectricity in Xcel Energy's green energy and energy efficiency initiatives and the future of waterpower on the Minneapolis riverfront.
