The October business forum is unique from many others in that we will hear some practical advice from a specialist on change management. Lori J. Abrams, Ph.D. is an award winning faculty member in the Department of Strategic Management at the University Of Minnesota Carlson School Of Management and is a licensed mediator. She is also an Organizational Development consultant specializing in negotiation and the communication of change.

Attend this forum to learn insightful aspects of organizational change and essential practices for communicating change both internally within your organization and externally to your constituents.

October 20, 2016, Thursday - Sip of Science at Aster Cafe

Time: 5:30 pm

Location: Aster Café, River Room, 125 Main Street SE

October Sip of Science - Invasive Mammals vs Endemics: Who will be voted off the island?

Sip of Science returns! Due to the increased popularity of the Sip of Science program, we are now REQUIRING RSVPs and tickets at the door. Please be sure to RSVP early and bring your ticket to the event!

Invasive species are the leading cause of bird extinctions on islands worldwide. Eradication of these animals is an increasingly used conservation tool to protect endemic island species. Protecting biodiversity through conservation actions can be an inexact science and a dirty proposition in a race against time — a high stakes contest to save species, protect populations and preserve biodiversity. Join us as Dr. Julia Ponder talks about the challenges and rewards in the effort to eradicate invasive rodent populations and protect endemic species in the Galapagos Islands.

ABOUT THIS MONTH'S SPEAKER

Julia Ponder is Executive Director of The Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota’s College of Veterinary Medicine. She received her degree in veterinary medicine from Texas A&M University and has a Masters in Public Health from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Ponder has presented around the world on avian and raptor medicine. In addition to her clinical work, she is currently focused on the wildlife health component of Ecosystem Health, raptors as sentinels for infectious disease and environmental contaminants, and identifying emerging issues related to raptor health and populations. She has worked with endangered and threatened raptor populations, and consulted globally on raptor health issues.

A SIP OF SCIENCE bridges the gap between science and culture in a setting that bridges the gap between brain and belly. Food, beer and learning are on the menu in a happy hour forum that puts science in context through storytelling. This science happy hour is sponsored by the National Center for Earth-surface Dynamics (NCED) and is a chance to hear about new and exciting research over beer, in a cool bar. Come talk with the experts about their efforts to address some of the Earth's most pressing problems. NCED's A SIP OF SCIENCE brings the wonder of science to happy hour.

Time: 7 PM - 9 PM

Location: The Loft Literary Center

Holy Cow Press Publication Launch: Fred Amram

These compelling stories form a riveting memoir that begins with the author's birth during the rise of Hitler in 1930s Germany. He and his surviving family soon escape to Holland and sail to America where they encounter many challenges as immigrants in a new world. This country truly becomes a land of opportunity where one can build a new life and become more than a "Holocaust survivor."

Fred Amram is a retired University of Minnesota professor of communication and creativity. He spent his early years in Hanover, Germany, where he experienced the Holocaust from its inception in 1933. He witnessed Kristallnacht and the Gestapo invading his home. He watched the British bombers from his balcony when Jews were banned from air raid shelters. The loss of uncles, aunts, a grandmother, and many more relatives has motivated him to share his experiences in hopes of ending genocide everywhere.

Time: 4:00 pm to 5:30pm

Location: Milkweed Books on the first floor of the Open Book building

BODY OF WATER: Reading & Signing with Chris Dombrowski

Join author and fly-fishing guide CHRIS DOMBROWSKI for a reading and signing in celebration of the release of his book, 'Body of Water: A Sage, A Seeker, and the World's Most Alluring Fish,' which Publishers Weekly calls "a lyrical, genre-defying tribute."

This event is *free*!

ABOUT THE BOOK
"A lyrical, genre-defying tribute. Drawing on Caribbean history and the evolution of fly-fishing, Dombrowski's foray into nonfiction proves thematically complex, finely wrought, and profoundly life-affirming."
—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

On a whim, and during a particularly challenging time in his life, fly-fishing guide and author Chris Dombrowski accepted an invitation to the Bahamas—a trip that would alter his life's trajectory.

In the Bahamas, Dombrowski is introduced to the country's most elusive and highly prized creature, the bonefish; and to David Pinder, the legendary fisherman who helped build the bonefishing industry. Bonefish are prized not for their taste or beauty, but for their speed and elusiveness. No one was better at hunting them than Pinder, whose vision, perception, accuracy, and patience were virtuosic. Pinder's gifts, combined with the appeal of the bonefish, turned the Bahamas into one of the world's great fishing destinations. In 1958 the cost of a guided fishing trip was five dollars; by 2012, that price had risen at three times the rate of inflation to six hundred dollars.

But, as Dombrowski shows, it is possible to love a place to death. Masterfully weaving together the ecological destruction of overfishing and Pinder's post-guiding life, which had left him with cataracts and a modest severance package after forty years of service, Dombrowski unravels a story of clarity, humor, and spirit, one that is "destined to be a classic" (Jim Harrison).

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Born in Michigan, Chris Dombrowski earned his MFA from the University of Montana. He is the author of two collections of poems, and his poetry and nonfiction have been widely published. Also a fly-fishing guide, Dombrowski lives in Missoula, Montana. Body of Water is his first narrative nonfiction book.

October 15, 2016, Saturday - Meet the Artist of “Up and Down: The H.H.H. Metrodome Portfolio” at Mill City Museum

Time: 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Location: Mill City Museum, 704 S 2nd Street

Meet the Artist of “Up and Down: The H.H.H. Metrodome Portfolio”

Photographer Mark E. Jensen will be on hand to talk with visitors about his photography exhibit “Up and Down: The H.H.H. Metrodome Portfolio,” currently on display in the museum’s central Mill Commons.

From 1980-1982, Jensen photographed the construction of the Metrodome using a large format field camera patented in 1898. In 2014, he was awarded an Artists Initiative Grant by the Minnesota State Arts Board to photograph the stadium's demolition. The resulting pairs of black and white photographs present the rise and demise of the Metrodome, and more than 30 years of change in downtown Minneapolis.
.
The exhibit is on display through November 6, 2016, and was made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
