Time: 6:30pm to 8:00pm

Location: Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, 2315 Chicago Avenue

United Against Islamophobia Panel

Islamophobia is increasingly rising to the front of national attention. Establishing trust and building relationships among people of different faiths and cultures is a priority for Minneapolis Council Members Warsame and Frey. In a time when Islam is the subject of much discussion and controversy, Warsame and Frey hope to enable an ongoing open dialogue, in a safe environment for debate, and promote a more informed understanding of Muslim culture. They want to extend an invitation to all community members to attend to this panel on November 2 at 6:30 pm at the Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church.

“As an American who is a Muslim, black and an immigrant, Anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant bigotry undermines the values I strive to live out every day: the American values. It is important to talk about Islamophobia and raise our voices to increase awareness and education. It is my hope that leaders and community members work together to promote inclusion and respect for one another” – Abdi Warsame.

“As a Jewish man, I love my Muslim sisters and brothers. Now more than ever, appreciation and celebration of our differences must be paramount, and this forum provides a grand opportunity” – Jacob Frey

Confirmed speakers include:

The Honorable Judge LaJune Lange (Ret.)
Lange is a senior fellow with the Roy Wilkins Center for Human Relations and Social Justice. A retired State of Minnesota trial court judge, Lange is an expert on legal and constitutional standards for discrimination in state and federal courts.

Pastor Laurie Eaton
Pastor Eaton was called as pastor to Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Minneapolis in 2009. She is an active leader in ISAIAH, a coalition of approximately 100 congregations committed to living out faith values in the public realm, seeking racial and economic equity in our state.

October 30, 2016, Sunday - Second Story Reading Series with Marina Budhos and Bryan Bliss at The Loft

Time: 7:00pm

Location: The Loft Literary Center, at Open Book (Performance Hall), 1011 Washington Ave

Second Story Reading Series with Marina Budhos and Bryan Bliss

The Loft Literary Center Presents Second Story with Brian Bliss and Marina Budhos. Second Story is the Loft’s reading series for young adult and middle-grade authors. Perfect for families and readers of all ages, Second Story pairs a first-time author with a more established voice in children’s literature.

Bryan Bliss is the author of No Parking at the End Times. He holds master’s degrees in theology and fiction and—shockingly—found a professional job that allows him to use both of those degrees. His political philosophy degree, however, is still underutilized. His nonfiction has been published in Image Journal, along with various other newspapers, magazines, and blogs. He lives in Minneapolis with his wife and two children, both of whom wish he wrote books about dragons. Or wizards.

Marina Budhos is an author of award-winning fiction and nonfiction for adults and young adults. Her newest novel Watched takes on surveillance, and is a companion book to Ask Me No Questions, which was an ALA Best Books and Notable, and cited by Bustle.com as one of “12 YA Novels That Will Make You See the World Differently.” In 2017, Budhos will publish The Eyes of the World: Robert Capa, Gerda Taro & The Invention of Modern Photojournalism, co-authored with her husband Marc Aronson.  Their previous book, Sugar Changed the World: A Story of Magic, Spice, Slavery, Freedom & Science, was a Los Angeles Times Book Award Finalist. www.marinabudhos.com

Minnesota. Where did this name come from? The Dakota language is the first language of Minnesota, yet few Minnesotans know the meaning of the name of their state. Feast of Words is a family event centered on this place we all call home, Mnísota (Minnesota). Learn about indigenous place names throughout the state, try local indigenous foods, learn to prepare wóžapi, a traditional Dakota berry pudding, and immerse yourself in the Dakota language.

The program begins at 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm and last 60 minutes. This program is presented by the Dakhóta Iápi Okhódakičhiye (Dakota Language Society) and the Healing Place Collaborative.

October 29, 2016, Saturday - Dinner Detective at Courtyard Minneapolis Downtown

Time: Doors open at 6:00pm

Location: Courtyard Minneapolis Downtown, 1500 Washington Avenue S

Dinner Detective Minneapolis

The Dinner Detective is America’s LARGEST, award-winning interactive comedic murder mystery dinner show! Our high-energy, modern-day whodunit is combined with a full four-course meal.

Our immensely popular murder mystery shows are set in the present day. Unlike other murder mystery dinner shows (or just dinner shows in general), with The Dinner Detective, you and your guests will not find themselves staring at cheesy costumes, there will be no recited campy dialogue and certainly no hokey song and dance. Our performers are dressed just like everyone else, leaving all of the guests to suspect who is a part of the show and who is not! All scripts are based on actual cold cases and are created in house. From the get go, the guests are seated with the performers and most likely will not realize it! Our Detectives enter the room, proceed to interrogate guests, find clues and start the investigation. This allows our guests to socialize with and interrogate each other, while deciphering real life-based clues. At the end of the night, prizes are awarded to the Top Sleuth who solves the crime!
