March 25, 2018, Sunday - Cochon555 - Epic Culinary Competition at Loews Minneapolis

Time: 5 PM - 8 PM

Location:  Loews Minneapolis Hotel, 601 1st Avenue N

Cochon555 - Epic Culinary Competition at Loews Minneapolis

With an all-star cast of chefs who specialize in whole animal cooking paired with farmers responsibly raising delicious heritage breed pigs, Cochon555 returns to Minneapolis on March 25. The all-inclusive feast hosted by the beautiful Loews Minneapolis Hotel will feature a hundred-plus prominent chefs, farmers, sommeliers, distillers, brewers and barkeeps all working in concert to create luxurious moments that educate the palate.

Cochon555 is proud to announce this year’s group of cutting-edge chefs from across the city, each cooking one whole heritage breed pig raised by a family farm. The competing chefs include Host Chef Tim Fischer of Loews Minneapolis Hotel, Daniel del Prado of Martina, Karyn Ann Tomlinson ofCorner Table, Russell Klein of Meritage, and Remy Pettus of BARDO. One week before the event, each chef receives a 200-pound heritage breed pig sustainably sourced from Hidden Stream FarmLucky George Farm, Spring Wolf Farms, YKer Acres, and Kerns Farm, respectively, to create a maximum of 6 dishes for competition. With dozens of bites from iconic local chefs, boutique distillers, and artisan winemakers, the event is akin to an epic tasting menu of heritage breed pork with endless beverage pairings enjoyed standing up.

To win the friendly competition for a cause, a chef’s menu must woo twenty celebrity judges with their “Judge’s Plate” scored on utilization; technique; and overall flavor and be voted “best bite of the day” by guests. The winning “Prince or Princess of Pork” in Minneapolis will advance to the national finale, Grand Cochon, a head-to-tail, winner-takes-all showdown for the crown in Chicago on September 30. Additionally, running in tandem are two satellite beverage competitions to complement the whole-animal tilt; Punch Kings, a whole bottle, large-format spirit competition featuring five top barkeeps in a hand-crafted punch challenge and Somm Smackdown, a face-off of five top sommeliers pairing the best wine with heritage pig.

Placing the spotlight on “knowing where your food comes from," each event features an educational whole animal butchery program called the Pop-Up Butcher Shop and Silent Auction to benefit charity. This year’s headlining all-star butcher is Scott Pampuch of Fulton Brewing. Together with gifts from chefs, sponsors and John Boos & Co., they will raise money to benefit Piggy Bank, a start-up farm in Missouri that serves as a kickstarter for new family farms and a safety net for those in the wake of a disaster (flood, fire and disease). As an accelerator, Piggy Bank supplies piglets to small farms in exchange for business plans that are posted online in the name of transparent “open-source agriculture.”

At any given event, over a hundred-plus cooks, chefs, restaurant and bar owners, renowned sommeliers and barkeeps, can be found working in concert to create luxurious moments. We work with every type of restaurant and bar imaginable – from farm-to-table to Michelin star - and all participating chefs share one core value: they source products responsibly. If you like tasty pig, our goal is to buy the "best breeds" from farmers doing it the "right way". Your support benefits our foundation project, Piggy Bank, a start-up farm in Missouri that serves as a kickstarter for new family farms and a safety net for those in the wake of a disaster (fire, flood, and disease).

SIGNATURE FOOD EXPERIENCE: Over 1500 Pounds of Heritage Pig, 5 Chefs Cooking Whole Hog, Cocina De La Familia aka Asador de Pastor pop-up, Starter Bar with Cures, Pates and Foie, Signature Cheese Bar, Luxe Butter Bar, Tartare Bar w. Antica Wines, Royal Oak "Dirty Steaks" Tasting, Swine & Sweets w. Perfect Puree, and Mike's Pie Pop-Up Pie Shop.

Time: 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Location: Mill City Museum704 South 2nd Street

Washburn A Mill Tour

Take an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building. A guide will take visitors into the building's many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the building functioned during its peak flour milling years, and the many changes to the building over time. This is the only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building and the only chance to see some of its nonpublic spaces.

Tour highlights include:

  • The dramatic story of the 1878 Washburn A Mill explosion, and the other dangers that mill workers faced on a daily basis
  • "The Octopus," a large machine that directed wheat into nine storage bins
  • The Humphrey Manlift, a vertical conveyor belt that carried workers from floor to floor
  • The Rail Corridor where hundreds of boxcars arrived each day to unload wheat and carry away flour
  • Millstone plaza, originally paved with retired millstones and the location for lunchtime concerts by the Washburn-Crosby employee band in the 1920s
  • Evidence of the three major fires that have damaged the building in 1878, 1928 and 1991
  • The East Engine House, once home to a two-story steam engine, has been remodeled into two classrooms, while preserving the original railroad car pulling machinery

The tour includes no more than 1 mile of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.

March 24, 2018, Saturday - Minnesota Endo March

Minnesota Endo March

The Minnesota Endo March is the local Minnesota extension of the Worldwide Endometriosis March hosted and produced by the Minnesota Endo Warriors. March is endometriosis awareness month and on the last Saturday groups around the world gather to raise awareness and advocate for women with endometriosis.

Event Timeline

11:00-11:30 am | Registration Open
11:30-12:00 pm | Alchemy-style warm-up class for all levels
12:00-12:45 pm | March from Alchemy across the Stone Arch Bridge
1:00-3:00 pm | Post-March Celebration
The celebration will be a “Happy Hour” style event with hosted hors-d’oeuvres, non-alcoholic beverages, beer, and wine. Local endometriosis specialists will have the opportunity to speak and women living with endometriosis can share their stories. This is a family-friendly event and all are welcome. The actual march will only be about 1/2 a mile.

What is Endo?

Endometriosis is a chronic disease that affects the lives of over 176 million women around the world. One in every ten women are affected by this disease where the inner lining of the uterus (the womb), called the endometrium, grows outside the uterus involving other organs. This can cause inflammation and severe pain. In addition, women who are diagnosed with endometriosis may have painful bladder syndrome, digestive or gastrointestinal symptoms similar to a bowel disorder, as well as fatigue, tiredness or lack of energy, pelvic pain, painful intercourse and infertility. The cause of endometriosis is still unknown although women have been suffering for centuries. On average it takes 9 years for women to receive a diagnosis of endometriosis and proper diagnosis requires laparoscopic surgery, which is a significant barrier to care. Recognizing the symptoms and advocating for their health, women face an uphill battle. The Minnesota Endo March is an opportunity to show these women that Minnesota cares.

Farm to Brewery: Literally.

The term “Farm to Table” has become a conceit so overused and exhausted that it has become comical and nearly devoid of meaning. The next trend on the horizon is Farm to Bottle, Farm to Keg, Farm to Glass, etc. No to be outdone, Boom Island Brewing Company is taking it one step further: by physically transporting facets of the farm to the brewery in the city. Boom Island is teaming up with Chad Douglas, of Douglas Farms in Mora, Minnesota, to bring in farm animals that might be of some interest to craft beer lovers who are more city-centric.

March 22, 2018, Thursday - Next Generation of Parks Event Series: Lily Yeh at Mia

Time: 7:00pm

Location: Minneapolis Institute of Art, 2400 S 3rd Avenue

Next Generation of Parks Event Series: Lily Yeh

Lily Yeh is a compassionate and charismatic visual artist, sculptor, and activist whose community art projects have transformed the lives of thousands of people from Rwanda to West Palm Beach. “Creating art in forlorn and forsaken places is like making fire in the frozen darkness of the winter’s night,” she has said.

As Minneapolis initiates the historic Neighborhood Park Plan, a 20-year reinvestment in community parks, and seeks to reconcile decades of social injustice, Yeh’s practice of using art and beauty to heal can provide us with a roadmap to common ground.

In this can’t miss talk, Yeh will share her experience creating community in Philadelphia, transforming a school and its students in Beijing, and bringing healing through the Genocide Memorial Park, Rugerero Survivors Village, in Gisenyi, Rwanda.

Over 40 years, Yeh has refined a deliberate process for placemaking in which every step has an intention, even as, she says “people think we’ll be playing.” Yeh puts children at the center, because their innate vivacity and curiosity breaks down barriers and establishes what she describes as an “open space for everyone to step into on equal footing.” As the project unfolds, the voice of the community is heard and community leaders emerge.

Who Should Attend
Art and parks lovers, community activists, world-travelers (armchair and otherwise), and especially placemakers and planners, will all be moved and inspired by Yeh’s story. Be prepared: This talk will change how see the world and yourself in it.
