August 22, 2018, Wednesday - The Soap Factory Common Room Tour

Time:  Meet at the Soap Factory, 6:30pm walking tour

Location: Soap Factory, 514 Second Street SE

The Bathroom Tour

Restroom vs. bathroom vs. WC vs. potty vs. toilet? Gendered vs. unisex? Political wedge? ADA compliance? Pristine or horrific? To talk or avoid eye contact? To graffiti or not? Hand washing! Visiting the bathroom is a universal experience that can also be a fraught social and cultural touchpoint. Join Common Room in an exploration of some local bathrooms while discussing some global bathroom issues.

ABOUT COMMON ROOM
The Soap Factory continues its ongoing site-specific public program, Here & There: Rethinking Public Spaces, welcoming back Common Room for its 10th iteration of artist-led tours through the Twin Cities. Through August, themed tours will take place every Wednesday evening. Common Room topics provide a focus through which to explore multiple facets of the urban geography — in the past, these themes have included cats, skyways, fishing, freeway construction, weather, community kitchens, personal memory, sacred spaces, islands and more. The tours this year include The Casino Tour, The Piped Music Tour, The Bathroom Tour, and The Mobile Dance Party Tour to celebrate Common Room’s Tenth Anniversary.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Andy Sturdevant is an artist and writer living in Minneapolis. He is the author of two books of nonfiction, and he has exhibited his art projects at venues in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Seattle and elsewhere.

Sergio Vucci is a Minneapolis-based artist. He is a graduate of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and his work focuses primarily on engaging his surroundings outside of gallery spaces and on relational interactions, co-authoring ephemeral creative experiences with participants in response to place.

HERE & THERE
This project is supported and presented as part of Here & There: Rethinking Public Spaces, the Soap Factory’s ongoing site-specific public program. Rethinking Public Spaces presents artist projects that enliven underutilized spaces throughout Minnesota, rethinking public space and considering what it means to place-make through a contemporary, celebratory, and critical lens.

It is show time for the Mill City Players!  Rehearsing since mid-June, this energetic and talented group of young people are ready to perform. We hope you can join us August 21st at 7 p.m. in MacPhail Center for Music's Antonello Hall, or on August 25th at 1:30 p.m. in Central Library's Pohlad Hall. Williams is the Artistic Director and comes to this project with 42 years of theater experience and incredible skills. JW (as he is known) has been a professional actor, director, producer, and writer for almost 40 years.  Patricia Brown, adjunct professor of dance at the University of Minnesota and Macalester, teaches movement and serves as Associate Director. Ahanti Young, professional percussionist, actor, and spoken word artist teaches our actors drumming on paint pails and also serves as Associate Director.

This troupe was created and is sponsored by the Friends of the Mill District. We began a year ago and are now preparing to make this troupe a permanent group. The mission of the Friends is to create and support activities that build community, and are free of charge to all participants. We hit a home run with this group!  Come and see for yourself. August 19, 2018, Sunday - AUTOPTIC 2018 at Aria

Time: 10am – 6pm

Location: Aria, 105 First Street North

AUTOPTIC 2018  Free and open to the public.

In late 2012, a group of Twin Cities based cartoonists and publishers began planning for what was to become AUTOPTIC's inaugural show the following year. Rather than creating “just another comics/ graphics festival,” organizers chose to take a giant step forward into the bigger, messier world of independent culture at large. To accomplish this they showcased not only cartoonists and zinesters, but also poster artists, printmakers, musicians, alternative and small labels, illustrators, designers and more, ranging from the exclusively local to the internationally acclaimed. At its core, AUTOPTIC is a juried, expo-style show, but orbiting the expo are readings and talks, artist showcases and music events, held both at Aria and several other sites throughout Minneapolis. In addition to 120+ exhibitors from around the world (and around the corner), AUTOPTIC will feature an international slate of special guest artists.

August 18, 2018, Saturday - Engineering the Falls: History Player William de la Barre Tour at the Mill City Museum

Time:  10:30 am – 12 noon

Location:  Mill City Museum, 704 South 2nd Street

Engineering the Falls: History Player William de la Barre Tour

Additional Date: September 8

Join a walking tour of St. Anthony Falls led by costumed History Player William de la Barre, the Austrian engineer who spent half a century developing Minneapolis flour milling and waterpower. Visit the Minneapolis riverfront, the west side milling district and the Stone Arch Bridge and hear about the many ways the falls have changed over the years.

William de la Barre, an Austrian engineer, arrived in Minneapolis in 1878 and was hired by C.C. Washburn to oversee reconstruction of the Washburn A Mill after its 1878 explosion. De la Barre was soon involved in the management of waterpower companies at St. Anthony Falls, and spent a 50-year career engineering the falls to maximize the power available to Minneapolis millers.

This tour includes about 1.5 miles of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.
