September 6, 2018, Thursday - David Mura Book Launch: A Stranger's Journey at The Loft at Open Book

Time: 7 – 8:30 pm

Location: The Loft at Open Book (Performance Hall),1011 Washington Avenue

David Mura Book Launch: A Stranger's Journey

Long recognized as a master teacher at writing programs like VONA and the Loft, David Mura has written a book on creative writing which addresses our increasingly diverse American literature. Mura argues for a more inclusive and expansive definition of craft, particularly in relationship to race, even as he elucidates timeless rules of narrative construction in fiction and memoir. In A Stranger’s Journey, Mura poses two central questions. The first involves identity: How is writing an exploration of who one is and one’s place in the world? Mura examines how the myriad identities in our changing contemporary canon have led to new challenges regarding both craft and pedagogy. The book’s second central question involves structure: How does one tell a story? Mura provides clear, insightful narrative tools that any writer may use, taking in techniques from fiction, screenplays, playwriting and myth. He also candidly explores the newly evolved aesthetic principles of memoir and how questions of identity occupy a central place in contemporary memoir. $10 ($5 members).

The Mobile Dance Party Tour ("Move it” Tour)

Think dancing in the back of a moving truck (don’t worry, it will be parked!). We’re revisiting one of Common Room’s earliest events, Guest DJ Dance Party, and partnering with Dance Shanty and Moving Party alum, Brady Clark, to bring you the chance to tour, dance, mingle and celebrate Common Room in the best way we know how.

ABOUT COMMON ROOM
The Soap Factory continues its ongoing site-specific public program, Here & There: Rethinking Public Spaces, welcoming back Common Room for its 10th iteration of artist-led tours through the Twin Cities. Through August, themed tours will take place every Wednesday evening. Common Room topics provide a focus through which to explore multiple facets of the urban geography — in the past, these themes have included cats, skyways, fishing, freeway construction, weather, community kitchens, personal memory, sacred spaces, islands and more. The tours this year include The Casino Tour, The Piped Music Tour, The Bathroom Tour, and The Mobile Dance Party Tour to celebrate Common Room’s Tenth Anniversary.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Andy Sturdevant is an artist and writer living in Minneapolis. He is the author of two books of nonfiction, and he has exhibited his art projects at venues in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Seattle and elsewhere.

Sergio Vucci is a Minneapolis-based artist. He is a graduate of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and his work focuses primarily on engaging his surroundings outside of gallery spaces and on relational interactions, co-authoring ephemeral creative experiences with participants in response to place.

HERE & THERE
This project is supported and presented as part of Here & There: Rethinking Public Spaces, the Soap Factory’s ongoing site-specific public program. Rethinking Public Spaces presents artist projects that enliven underutilized spaces throughout Minnesota, rethinking public space and considering what it means to place-make through a contemporary, celebratory, and critical lens.
