April 18, 2019, Thursday - The Book Technologies of the Early ‘People of the Book’ at MCBA

Time: 7p - 9p

Location: Minnesota Center for Book Arts, 1011 Washington Ave S

The Book Technologies of the Early ‘People of the Book’

Minnesota Center for Book Arts is honored to partner with the HMML Hill Museum & Manuscript Library for a special free lecture exploring the history of the book:

"The Book Technologies of the Early ‘People of the Book’: Coptic and Ethiopic Christian Codices and Their Late Antique and Medieval Relatives" with Melissa Moreton

Thursday, April 18; 7-9pm
Open Book Performance Hall
Free and open to the public
Followed by light refreshments

The ancient Egyptian Christians, the Copts, were early innovators of the codex – a book bound at one edge, in the form we know it today in the west. As Christians, living in Roman territory in north Africa early in the first millennium, they contributed to the development of this new book structure which departed dramatically from the standard roll or scroll format. The Copts spread their book technologies to Ethiopian Christians in east Africa, who developed their own style of bookmaking. This lecture will focus on the Coptic and Ethiopic book traditions, highlighted with material from HMML’s collection, and trace the influence of early Christian books on the codex technologies of late antiquity and the Middle Ages.

Dr. Melissa Moreton is the Assistant Director of Strategic Initiatives at the Hill Museum and Manuscript Library and helps to further their global mission of preserving endangered texts through digitization, and increasing scholarly access to these manuscripts across the world. She is a codicologist and historian of the book, whose research focuses on book production in the wide Mediterranean during the ancient, medieval, and early modern periods [100-1600 CE].

Time: 7:00pm - 9:00 pm

Location: Central Library, 300 Nicollet Mall

More Than a Single Story: Men of Color in Today's America – A Dialogue Between Generations

More Than a Single Story: Men of Color in Today's America - A Dialogue Between Generations is a series of conversations curated by writer Carolyn Holbrook, inspired by Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's powerful TED talk, The Danger of a Single Story, showing how stereotypes are fostered when we treat one story of a people as their only story.

This event is free and open to the public. No registration required.

More Than a Single Story is a series of conversations curated by writer Carolyn Holbrook, inspired by Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s powerful TED talk, The Danger of a Single Story, showing how stereotypes are fostered when we treat one story of a people as their only story.

The difficulties young men of color face today are oppressive and often life-threatening. From education to the justice system to stereotypes in the media to discriminatory public policies, the environment many young men of color grow up in is not conducive to their psychological health or to fulfilling their potential. Yet there are many young men of color who are succeeding despite the world around them and older men of color who are helping them.

This panel, moderated by David Mura, will provide a dialogue between younger and older men of color about the conditions they face in the current political and social climate and the strategies used to survive, help others and help themselves. Panelists include Alexs Pate, Carter Meland, Ricardo Levins Morales, Kevin Yang, Yevrah Bradley and Suleiman Ada.
