April 24, 2019, Wednesday - Coming Out Of The Darkness Women's Circle

Time: 7 PM – 9 PM

Location: A-Mill Artist Lofts, 315 SE Main Street

Coming Out Of The Darkness Women's Circle

We are coming out of a long, dark and cold winter. Also possibly out of a time with heavy emotional turmoil. As the seasons change we flow with it or against it.

This will be a night for all women to take time in sacred space to focus and manifest. This will include support of other women in celebrating who we are and what we want to accomplish. A manifestation circle will be created! Come learn and join in with manifesting your future and setting the intention for the next few months of summer. We will find our voices and speak with pride. We will create the motivation we have been missing and call back our power.

There will also be time to discuss more Women's Circles and what you would like to see in a circle for future events. It is my hope as a Women's Cirlce Creatrix to host monthly circles for all of us to create a supportive community together.

Also if you are unable to attend, please reach out to Chelsey Krecklau for any ideas or requests.

A-Mill Artists Lofts has street parking, please plan accordingly for time to park. Bring a journal and pen for sure and a pillow to sit on if you would like.

April 24, 2019, Wednesday - 4th Annual National Poetry Month Party & Reading

Time: 6 PM – 8 PM

Location: Milkweed Editions, 1011 Washington Avenue S

4th Annual National Poetry Month Party & Reading

๐Ÿ’ซ Celebrate National Poetry Month with Milkweed Editions! ๐Ÿ’ซ

Join us for an evening honoring the vitality of the poetry community and three poets published in 2019 by Milkweed Editions: Lee Ann Roripaugh, Alex Lemon, and Su Hwang. Come for the poetry-themed drinks, stay for the actual poetry!

In TSUNAMI VS. THE FUKUSHIMA 50, Lee Ann Roripaugh takes a piercing, witty, and ferocious look into the heart of disaster and “offers a path toward liberty through the chaos and confusion.” In ANOTHER LAST DAY, Alex Lemon’s flair for the dark absurd rings ever more true in this intensely vulnerable, book-length series that confronts “the brokenness of our world and the self that breaks with it.” In her debut collection BODEGA (coming October 2019), Su Hwang witnesses the traumas and inequalities of race, immigration, and marginalization while coming of age in the ’80s and ’90s in New York City and offers a framework of moving forward with compassion.

RSVP TO RESERVE YOUR SPOT! Suggested donation of $10 to help cover food & drinks. No one will be turned away for lack of funds—all are welcome!

April 24, 2019, Wednesday - Morning Forum - Researching Tangletown at Mill City Museum

Time: 8:00 am

Location: Mill City Museum, 704 S 2nd Street

Morning Forum - Researching Tangletown

This April we have a special bonus Morning Forum for you! Our first Morning Forum looked at Minneapolis alleys, and our second on April 24 will focus on the process three young preservationists underwent to learn more about the unique architecture of the Tangletown neighborhood.

Three Macalester students have been working with Preserve Minneapolis to study a set of buildings in the Tangletown neighborhood of Minneapolis. In particular, they are exploring the history of the Washburn Park Water Tower, the Washburn Orphanage, and the collection of Lustron Houses present in the neighborhood.

This presentation is the first opportunity for these students to share their research with the public, after which point it will be compiled on Preserve Minneapolis' self-guided tour site - Minneapolis Historical (www.minneapolishistorical.org).

Mackenzie O’Brien is a senior at Macalester College studying Geography, Urban Studies, and History. She is originally from San Antonio, Texas.

Brooke Sapper is a first year at Macalester College from Ashland, Wisconsin. She studies History, Classics, and Spanish.

Emma Heuchert is a senior at Macalester College. She has a major in History, minors in Linguistics and Educational Studies, and an African Studies concentration. Born in South Africa, Emma was raised in Meadville, Pennsylvania.

April 22, 2019, Monday - 2040 Transportation Plan Public Meeting at Central Library

Community Workshop - 2040 Transportation Plan Public Meeting

Time:4–6pm

Location: Minneapolis Central Library, Doty Board Room, 300 Nicollet Mall

After setting the vision for the future growth of Minneapolis with the 2040 comprehensive plan, the city is now looking to change its approach to transportation, away from cars and toward sustainable alternatives.

City officials this year are developing a guiding document for the next ten years of municipal transportation projects. Starting this month, they will host meetings asking people how they move around the city and how that mobility could be improved.

"We need to make sure our transportation system really provides options for people, particularly in growing neighborhoods," City Council President Lisa Bender said last week.

It's one of the first topics the city is tackling after the hard-won approval of the 2040 comprehensive plan last year. Improving sustainability, safety and equity in transportation were all goals mentioned in that document, said Kathleen Mayell, the city's transportation planning manager.

In order to reach the goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050, drivers would need to substantially reduce the number of miles traveled by automobile, according to the transportation plan website. Mayell said this means supporting expected population growth "without having every additional household unit equate to an additional car on the road."

Therefore, the city is seeking to improve pedestrian, biking and public transit infrastructure. This could mean bringing public transit to areas where more housing is expected to be built, improving the reliability of bus service and adding protected bike lanes.

The city is hoping the changes will enable it to eliminate traffic-related deaths and serious injuries by 2027. For the last ten years, an average of 95 people per year have died or been critically injured on streets, a disproportionate number of them walkers, bikers and people in low-income neighborhoods.

"We have a lot of opportunity within our street network to really increase, I think, people's ability to get around," Mayell said.

The transportation plan would also address how other vehicles and growing modes of transportation, including delivery trucks, ride-share cars and motorized scooters, would fit into the city's overall system.

Several public workshops on the plan have been scheduled in different areas of the city, including two meetings for neighborhood organizations this week. Bender and Mayell said they encourage people to come share their views on the plan's goals.

"We want to hear how people are getting around the city now. What's working, what isn't," Bender said.

The transportation plan is expected to be adopted in 2020.

  • The Rail Corridor where hundreds of boxcars arrived each day to unload wheat and carry away flour
  • Millstone plaza, originally paved with retired millstones and the location for lunchtime concerts by the Washburn-Crosby employee band in the 1920s
  • Evidence of the three major fires that have damaged the building in 1878, 1928, and 1991
  • The East Engine House, once home to a two-story steam engine, has been remodeled into two classrooms, while preserving the original railroad car pulling machinery
