Backstage tours offer a behind-the-scenes look at how Guthrie shows are taken from script to stage. In 45 minutes, you'll visit the Guthrie's signature thrust and proscenium stages; enter the expansive scene shop where sets are built and painted, and learn how they're transported to each stage; visit the shop where costumes are expertly stitched, fabrics dyed and wigs constructed; and explore the rehearsal rooms where company members prepare for performance.

Cost: $10 per person; $6 for subscribers, students and seniors.

HALLOWEEN TOONS FOR TOTS: Vintage cartoons with skeletons, spiders, and spooks plus a couple of monster films comprise this year’s Halloween program of slightly scary delights. Make your own Halloween craft to take home. Come in costume! There will be a parade around the auditorium before the films.

For kids in preschool (age 3) and up and their families. Children's film curators for the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival will present a pre-show art activity and educational intro for children's film fans before each screening. October 16, 2010, Saturday - Family Printmaking: The Woodland Art Style, with Gordon Coons

Time: 1:00-4:00pm

Location: Mill City Museum

Families can participate in linoleum block printmaking in conjunction with “Original Green,” an exhibit of contemporary American Indian on view through November 21 in Mill City Museum's Mill Commons. Noted Minneapolis artist Gordon Coons, whose works are featured in the exhibit, will demonstrate the process for creating carved blocks, then show participants how to make their own prints to take home from linoleum block in the Woodland Art Style. Coons is an enrolled member of the Lac Courte Oreilles Tribe of northern Wisconsin.

This workshop is part of “Greening the Riverfront,” a series of programs exploring our relationship with nature, past, present and future.

Presented in partnership with Americans for UNFPA, The Advocates for Human Rights and the Minnesota International Center

Guthrie Director Joe Dowling will moderate a panel discussion on the challenge of human rights, featuring Dr. Henia Dakkak, a senior technical specialist with the Humanitarian Response Branch at United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA); Dr. Ghafar Lakanwal, the founder of Partnership for Education of Children in Afghanistan (PECA) and the MultiCultural Development Center (MCDC); Robin Phillips, the executive director of The Advocates for Human Rights and former director of the Women's Human Rights Program; and Dr. Lisa Schirch, founding director of the 3D Security Initiative and a professor of peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University's graduate Center for Justice & Peacebuilding.

At 8:45pm, names will be drawn randomly and musicians will play in the order that the names are drawn. Music will begin at 9:00pm. During a full night, everyone gets time to do three songs (15-20 minutes).
