Writer and humorist Ian Frazier is the critically-accclaimed author of Great Plains, On the Rez, and Dating Your Mom, among other works. His latest book, Travels in Siberia, is the culmination of ten years of research and travel to the mythical region of Siberia. More than just a historical travelogue, Travels in Siberia is an account of Russia since the end of the Soviet Union and a personal and often humorous reflection on this vast country – exploring the geography, the people, the history, the weather, the bugs, and the unexpected. Frequent contributor to The New Yorker, Frazier lives in New Jersey with his wife and children.

Talk of the Stacks is a reading series exploring contemporary literature and culture held at the Minneapolis Central Library in downtown Minneapolis. Programs are free and open to the public. Seating is first come, first served. Programs begin at 7 PM. Doors open at 6:15 PM.

Entering what F. Scott Fitzgerald might term the third act of an already celebrated career, Max Weinberg presents the Max Weinberg Big Band. Building upon his seventeen years as the leader of what Tom Shales, famed TV critic of the Washington Post called “the best band in late night Television,” the Max Weinberg Big Band is a bold, swinging fifteen-piece aggregation that continues the traditions established by Max’s musical heroes — among whom Frank Sinatra, Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Doc Severinsen, and Maynard Ferguson lead the pack.

Location: Mill City Museum

Get an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building. A museum interpreter will take visitors into the building's many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the building functioned during its peak flour milling years and the many changes to the building over time. Also covered will be the challenges of preserving the 120-year-old, fire-damaged building; its art, architecture and interior design; and the St. Anthony Falls Historic District.

Although many parts of the mill can be explored during regular museum visits, this is the public's only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building.

Fee: $12 adults, $10 seniors and college students, $8 children ages 6-17 and MHS members. Tour includes museum admission.

Marina Budhos is an author of award-winning fiction and nonfiction. She has published the novels, Tell Us We’re Home, recently praised by the New York Times as "intelligent and earnestly passionate," Ask Me No Questions, an ALA Notable and winner of the first James Cook Teen Book Award, The Professor of Light, House of Waiting, and a nonfiction book, Remix: Conversations with Immigrant Teenagers. Her short stories, articles, essays, and book reviews have appeared in publications such as The Kenyon Review, Ploughshares, The Literary Review, The Nation, Dissent, Marie Claire, Redbook, Travel & Leisure, Ms., Los Angeles Times, and in numerous anthologies. Budhos has received an EMMA (Exceptional Merit Media Award), a Rona Jaffe Award for Women Writers, and a Fellowship from the New Jersey Council on the Arts. She has been a Fulbright Scholar to India, given talks throughout the country and abroad, and is an associate professor of English and Asian Studies at William Paterson University. She is married to editor and author Marc Aronson and their book, Sugar Changed the World: A Story of Magic, Spice, Slavery, Freedom & Science, is also forthcoming in 2010 from Clarion/Houghton Mifflin.

According to geographers, the American West begins at the 100th longitudinal meridian. Thanks to the fact that this meridian is the main street of her Nebraska hometown, Kirstin Cronn-Mills grew up six blocks east of the West. She is a poet as well as a fiction writer, and she holds a Ph.D. from Iowa State University.  Currently, she teaches literature, writing, and critical thinking classes at South Central College in North Mankato, Minnesota, where she lives with her husband and son.  Her first young adult novel, The Sky Always Hears Me and the Hills Don’t Mind (Flux/Llewellyn) was a finalist for the 2010 Minnesota Book Award in Young People’s Literature.

Join Open Book for the first of their Family Days, a yearlong series of events to increase the visibility of Open Book's presence in the West Bank neighborhood and improve accessibility to programming at their founding tenant organizations. For the kickoff open house event, Open Book will be open to the public with experiences for kids and families on all floors of the building. There will be storytelling with Milkweed Editions, writing exercises with The Loft teaching artists, spoken word workshops and bookmaking activities with MCBA staff. There also will be refreshments, a raffle and information about more upcoming events in the Family Days series. Free and open to the public.
