January 29, 2011, Saturday - White vs. Whole Wheat: A Tale of Two Flours at Mill City Museum

See how history is revealed in food through a baking demonstration focusing on the story behind white and whole wheat flour. Discover how Minneapolis millers perfected a way to make white flour on an industrial scale, hear about the popularity of white flour in the 19th century, what effects this had on nutrition, and why flour today is frequently enriched.
Visitors will also learn why Sylvester Graham developed a whole wheat cracker "to improve health and morality," hear the pros and cons of each type of flour, sample baked goods made from each, and take home a copy of the recipes.

This event is part of “Greening the Riverfront,” a series of programs exploring our relationship with nature, past, present and future.

The Guthrie will be the Upper Midwest’s only screening venue. January 27, 2011, Thursday - Public Presentation by Minneapolis Riverfront Design Competition Finalists

Public presentation: January 27, 2011, 7:00pm at Walker Art Center

Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board and Minneapolis Parks Foundation, with Creative Partners, University of Minnesota College of Design and Walker Art Center, are pleased to announce the Minneapolis Riverfront Design Competition finalists:

The teams' collective work includes award-winning riverfront and industrial reclamation park projects, in places such as Shanghai, Memphis, Toronto, New York City, Dubai, Milwaukee and London.

Fifty-five design teams responded to the RFQ, and the 13-member jury noted that the quality was exceptionally high. Says Bill Morrish, MR|DC jury member, and Dean of the School of Constructed Environments and Associate Dean, Parsons The New School of Design in New York City, “The four teams we short-listed comprise innovative and inspirational people who will work very hard to create great concepts for the Minneapolis riverfront.” Learn more about their work on the Teams page.

Each team will produce 21st-century parks designs for 220 acres of parkland and the surrounding neighborhoods along both sides of the 5.4-mile stretch of the Mississippi River from the Stone Arch Bridge in the historic downtown Mill District to the city’s northern limits. The winning design will be a comprehensive, integrated vision for the Upper Riverfront that establishes parks as the engine for economic development, transforms the river into a connector rather than a barrier between east and west banks, and refocuses Minneapolis toward what is one of the three great rivers of the world.

Working with the musicians of ICE, Nathan Davis has crafted a cycle of beautiful new works for a small combination of instruments that transform into an architecture of color, texture, rhythm and breath. Using microphones as microscopes, he draws out the fine details of sound that exist all around us, making music that magnifies the essential characteristics of instruments and the fragile athleticism of playing them.

Join Ellen Ferrari for Saturday mornings of family book arts fun! Each workshop starts off with a story and game to warm up your creativity and then dives into a book arts project. Workshops accommodate a range of developmental levels so that adults and children (or adult/child teams) may choose to work together or side-by-side. Each participant receives supplies to use during the workshop, but may choose to bring one set home if working with his or her partner. Ellen will provide older children with suggestions for extending their learning.

Get an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building. A museum interpreter will take visitors into the building's many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the building functioned during its peak flour milling years and the many changes to the building over time. Also covered will be the challenges of preserving the 120-year-old, fire-damaged building; its art, architecture and interior design; and the St. Anthony Falls Historic District.

Although many parts of the mill can be explored during regular museum visits, this is the public's only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building.

Curated by the local choreographers of Curio Dance, Giselle Mejia and Dario Mejia, Drop the Mic! is a culmination of the most talented and dedicated dancers in the Midwest. Drop the Mic! will be part performance, part breakdance competition and features more than 30 performers with dance styles including hip-hop, breakdance, krumpin, pop n lock, tap dance, bucket drumming, beat boxing and an electroluminescent light show. Dancin’ Dave and D-Skreet “Groove Fellaz”, B-Boy J-Sun, Buckets and Tap Shoes, Christ Up Dance Crew, HYPE Dance Company, Obtuse Crew, Tish Jones, Ti-en-T, The Beat Squad and the DG Light Dancers are scheduled to appear.

The Live at the Guthrie concert series has a long-standing history of providing an eclectic mix of music and comedy appealing to a wide range of audiences. Illustrious performers such as James Taylor, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Robin Williams and the Indigo Girls all performed at the Guthrie in the early years of their careers. The 2010-2011 Loft Mentor Series in Poetry and Creative Prose presents nonfiction mentor Patricia Weaver Francisco reading with program participants Amber Larson and Lee Thomas.
Amber Larson (fiction) is a graduate of the University of Oregon’s Master of Fine Arts program in Creative Writing. She currently lives in Minneapolis with her husband and daughter and is working on her first novel, Still Waters.

Lee C. Thomas (poetry) grew up in Northfield and attending Lewis & Clark College, the University of Munich, and the University of Minnesota. He is a professional communicator and an aspiring poet. In 2008, he merged these interests to create Footnote Press, a studio that designs and builds websites for writers. Lee’s first published poem, “Reservations,” appeared in the online journal FLURRY* in 2010. He lives in Minneapolis.

A native of Detroit, Patricia Weaver Francisco (nonfiction) graduated from the University of Michigan (B.A. Journalism) and has lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota since 1974. She is the author of Telling: A Memoir of Rape and Recovery, as well as a novel, Cold Feet and Village Without Mirrors (with Timothy Francisco), a collection of essays and photographs which chronicle encounters with the Tarascan Indians of central Mexico. She is a former associate editor of Minnesota Monthly magazine and currently teaches creative writing in the MFA program at Hamline University.
