The Team Ortho Foundation's Get Lucky! 7K presented by Kieran's Irish Pub.  The 7K course travels along downtown Minneapolis and the Mississippi River.

•Start time:  10:00 a.m.
•This is a single loop of 7 kilometers.
•Race will be chip-timed.
•Course will be open for 2 hours (maximum 30 minute/mile pace)
•Three Cheer Zones including Irish Dancers!Walkers are welcome. iPods/headsets are welcome.

No strollers or dogs allowed.  There are no age requirements for this race.

Join the American Red Cross as they host the Gabrielle Giffords Honorary Save-a-Life Saturday on March 19. The one-hour trainings in First Aid & CPR will be offered for free thanks to the support of Walgreens and Safeway.

The training includes instruction in hands-only CPR, controlling external bleeding and managing shock.

The Twin Cities Area Chapter is offering classes at the following times:

Kathryn Kysar is the author of two books of poetry, Dark Lake and Pretend the World, and she edited Riding Shotgun: Women Write About Their Mothers.

She has received fellowships from Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts, the Minnesota State Arts Board, National Endowment for the Humanities and the Anderson Center for Interdisciplinary Studies. Kysar serves on the board of directors for the Association of Writers and Writing Programs and teaches at Anoka-Ramsey Community College and The Loft Literary Center.

March 19, 2011, Saturday - Tunnel of Fudge Cake: The Bake-Off and the Bundt Pan at Mill City Museum

See how history is revealed in food as Mill City Museum staff lead a demonstration in the Baking Lab. Explore the history of the 1966 Pillsbury Bake-Off Second-place winning recipe, The Tunnel of Fudge Cake, its connection to local company Nordic Ware, makers of the Bundt Pan, and the fascination bakers today hold for replicating the recipe. Visitors can learn about baking history, sample the cake, get baking tips and take home a copy of the recipe

Mill City Museum’s Baking Lab is an exhibit and programming area where baking takes place every day. Milling operations tested and perfected their flours in areas that might be thought of as the original test kitchens. In the 20th century companies like Pillsbury and General Mills began using these laboratories to develop new consumer products. In Mill City Museum’s Baking Lab, visitors can grind wheat, taste bread, and taste samples of the baked goods, while exploring the art and science of baking, the food revolution, and the social history of baking. During the year visitors are also be able to watch professional baking demonstrations.

Fee: Programs included with museum admission of $10 adults, $8 seniors and college students, $5 children ages 6-17; free for MHS members.

Expand your attention span and enjoy our first feature length childish film!  The extras: Submit a child's drawing based on one of this month's films to the Childish Films drawing contest!

A revival of feature-length films for kids and grown-ups to enjoy together on the big screen, with many shows lined up for local schools' Spring Break.

All ages welcome at all films. Children under the age of 12 should be accompanied by an adult. Attendees can submit a drawing at each film to be included in our Childish Films Online Art Show.

With sell-out crowds at last year's festival, Minnesotans' love affair with Cuban cinema is clear. And it is also clear that there is a hunger for information about this intriguing island to our south, so rich in music and the arts. So, although most of us can't get there in person, we can get a taste of Cuban life through the movies.

The film festival will again be presented at St. Anthony Main Theatre and will consist of six features.

March 17, 2011, Thursday - Publication Reading: Neve Maslakovic - Regarding Ducks and Universes at the Loft

Regarding Ducks and Universes is Neve Maslakovic’s first novel. Before that, she was busy writing technical papers and finishing her PhD in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University’s STARLab (Space, Telecommunications and Radioscience Laboratory). She spent her early years speaking Serbian in the city of Belgrade, in what was then communist Yugoslavia. After stops along the way in London, New York and the San Francisco Bay Area, she has settled in the Twin Cities.

About Regarding Ducks and Universes: Felix Sayers wasn’t born when the Universe was split into two dual realities: Universe A and Universe B. And so, for most of his life in San Francisco A, he has had no reason to wonder about San Francisco B and the other reality that’s just a portal trip away. He’s content with his day job writing culinary instruction books and nighttime dream of penning an Agatha Christie-style mystery. But then, Felix discovers he’s a little older than he thought and that he has an “alter”—his double, running around in Universe B—and everything changes.

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band derives its name from the Preservation Hall, the venerable music venue located in the heart of New Orleans’ French Quarter, founded in 1961 by Allan and Sandra Jaffe. Whether performing at Carnegie Hall or Lincoln Center, for British Royalty or the King of Thailand, this music embodies a joyful, timeless spirit. Perhaps best known for his role as Niles in the hit sitcom “Frasier,” Hyde Pierce makes his way to the Guthrie direct from Broadway where he recently starred in La Bête. In addition to a celebrated career on Broadway, performing in musicals such as Monty Python’s Spamalot and Curtains, he has acted in theaters across the country, including the Guthrie where his credits include The Seagull, Tartuffe, Cyrano de Bergerac and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

March 12, 2011, Saturday - Tim Carroll Opening Reception at The Soap Factory

Live music and soundscapes featuring Teen Anal Terrorist, The Blind Turk, Jason Wade and Jaime Carrera

Tim Carroll is a record of time, authorship and endurance through performance and installation. Tim Carroll utilizes the entirety of The Soap Factory’s 12,000 sq ft gallery space in his most recent installation. Carroll will transform The Soap Factory into a maze-like path by stretching thousands of feet of commercial tar paper across every wall and column. With a 6 ft height of tar paper running throughout the gallery, Carroll uses chalk to create a continuous series of vertical lines. Beginning at the opening reception and finishing on April 10th, the artist will be present in the gallery and drawing for all open gallery hours--a total of 98 hours.

Carroll has worked with tar paper and chalk for several years. He first found inspiration in ancient Greek pottery and Victorian needlepoint. Attracted to the raw, industrial texture of tar paper and the supple quality of chalk, the artist has utilized The Soap Factory’s rough-hewn building as a jumping off point for this large-scale installation work. Carroll strikes a balance with the elegant simplicity of his black and white materials and the raw texture of both the tar paper and gallery.
