An evening in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness—at Open Book. Four authors will read from recently published books or works in progress:

Greg Breining writes about travel, science and nature for the New York Times, Audubon and other publications. He will read from his new book of essays (with photographs by Layne Kennedy) Paddle North: Canoeing the Boundary Waters-Quetico Wilderness.

Betty Vos Hemstad, nature photographer, community volunteer and summer resident on the Gunflint Trail for 35 years will present from her book Wildflowers of the Boundary Waters: Hiking Through the Seasons.

Joe Paddock is an award-winning poet and an environmental writer. In midlife he spent much of a six-year period living in a cabin on Minnesota's wild Kettle River. He is the principal author of the Sierra Club book Soil and Survival, and the author of Keeper of the Wild, the biography of Ernest Oberholtzer, the central early figure in the preservation of the boundary lakes region between Minnesota and Ontario. Paddock will read selections from this book that provide insight into that early struggle.

Stephen Wilbers, author of several books on effective writing and a chapbook of poems about wilderness advocate Ernest Oberholtzer, will read from his work in progress, a book based on his nearly 30 years of canoeing with his father, Canoeing Across Time: A Boundary Waters History, to be published this spring by The History Press.

Paula's commentaries can be heard on NPR's Morning Edition and read on the Huffington Post, and she is one of the most popular panelists on NPR's hilarious weekly news quiz show, Wait Wait…Don't Tell Me. Get an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building. A museum interpreter will take visitors into the building's many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the building functioned during its peak flour milling years and the many changes to the building over time. Also covered will be the challenges of preserving the 120-year-old, fire-damaged building; its art, architecture and interior design; and the St. Anthony Falls Historic District.

Although many parts of the mill can be explored during regular museum visits, this is the public's only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building.

Ten Thousand Things explores this central question with John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt, A Parable, beginning with a tour to prisons, housing projects, homeless shelters and senior centers starting January 28, and culminating with four weekends of public performances at Open Book February 11 to March 6. Peter Rothstein guest directs Sally Wingert and Kris Nelson in this fiery battle between a nun and a priest over suspicions of sexual abuse of a child. The Doubt cast also includes Jane Froiland and Regina Marie Williams. Peter Vitale provides music, with sets by Dean Holzman and costumes by Amelia Cheever.

What better way to break up a Minnesota winter than a talk about historic preservation in Cuba? Bob Mack of MacDonald and Mack Architects will make the presentation. Minneapolitans Patricia and Bob Mack visited Cuba with a group studying architecture and urban planning, including a fair amount of preservation.

In February of this year, Bob will be returning with the Association for Preservation Technology for even more preservation-focused study. Join Patricia and Bob on February 23 to hear about Cuban policies and technologies related to preservation of their historic resources.
