Time: 7:00pm

Winner of the 1922 Nobel Peace Prize, Nansen met Ueland, author of If You Want to Write, in New York City in 1929. The two shared an intense, year-long correspondence until his death. Nansen's letters have been called "some of the most passionate, candid and eloquent in the English language," and "a true love song." Complemented by a sampling of Ueland's published work and unpublished diaries, Brenda, My Darling offers profound insight into the lives of two extraordinary individuals. Eric Utne, editor of the collection, step-grandson of Ueland, and founder of Utne Reader, will read from and discuss the book. A reception follows.

January 9, 2012, Monday - NT Live Filmed Presentation of Collaborators at the Guthrie

Time:  7:30pm

Location: McGuire Proscenium, Guthrie, 818 2nd Street South

The Guthrie Theater presents an NT Live FILMED PRESENTATION of Collaborators, a new play by John Hodge.

Moscow, 1938. A dangerous place to have a sense of humour; even more so a sense of freedom. Mikhail Bulgakov, living among dissidents, stalked by secret police, has both. And then he's offered a poisoned chalice: a commission to write a play about Stalin to celebrate his 60th birthday.

Inspired by historical fact, Collaborators embarks on surreal journey into the fevered imagination of the writer as he loses himself in a macabre and disturbingly funny relationship with the omnipotent subject of his drama.

January 9, 2012, Monday - Arts Town Hall Meeting at Mill City Museum

Time: 7:00pm

Location: Mill City Museum, 704 Second Street South

An open call to the arts community:

On January 9, an Arts Town Hall Meeting will be held at the Mill City Museum. PLACE, a nonprofit that builds sustainable arts communities in the United States and the United Kingdom, has been engaged by developer Dominium to perform a comprehensive artist study to determine if there is interest in the creation of at least 350 new living and working spaces for artists. The two proposed sites, the historic Schmidt Brewery in Saint Paul and the historic Pillsbury A Mill in Minneapolis, will be preserved as affordable space for the arts including apartments, studios, galleries, rehearsal and performance space and other uses. Organizers want to hear from you about the need for space, how to use the large shared spaces and how to get their survey in as many artist “hands” as possible.
