August 15, 2014, Friday - Janet Burroway Reading at The Loft

Time:  7:00pm

Location: The Loft at Open Book (Performance Hall), 1011 Washington Ave S

Janet Burroway Reading

Losing Tim is a memoir by a mother about a soldier son who killed himself. It’s not an easy read. But it’s a beautiful one. Burroway, a National Book Award nominee, welcomes readers to grieve along with her, while also providing a lens into how soldiers, and military contractors, like her son, are changed by their combat experiences. Jonathan Shay, author of Achilles in Vietnam: Combat Trauma and the Undoing of Character, a highly acclaimed volume on PTSD, and a 2007 MacArthur Foundation Fellow, comments in the foreword, ”To me, the pain recalls Homer’s Iliad, in which, as James Tatum puts it in The Mourner’s Song, ‘the beauty [of the poetry] is in the killing.”’

Janet Burroway is the author of eight novels, plays, poetry, essays, texts for dance, and children’s books. She was nominated for the National Book Award in 1977 for her novel Raw Silk. Her Writing Fiction: A Guide to Narrative Craft is the most widely used creative writing text in America, and her multigenre Imaginative Writing is out in a third edition. Her most recent novel is Bridge of Sand (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2009), and her play Medea with Child was produced in 2010 by Sideshow Theatre Company in Chicago. She is at work on a musical adaptation of Barry Unsworth’s novel Morality Play with composer Matthew M. Kiedrowski. She is the Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor Emerita at Florida State University. Her most recent book is Losing Tim, a memoir about her son, a private contractor in the Iraq War.

August 13th, 6-8pm
Indie Rock
The Cloak Ox is made up of indie rock vets Andrew Broder and longtime friends and sometimes bandmates Jeremy Ylvisaker, Mark Erickson and Martin Dosh. In 2011 the group topped City Pages new artist Picked to Click list and in 2013 their full length Shoot the Dog made top ten lists by the Star Tribune and City Pages. “Shoot the Dog is loaded with the nervous, sensory-grinding energy of urban life…and the jaggedy frayed art-rock noodling of bands like Television and latter-day Wilco.”
-Chris Riemenschneider, Star Tribune

August 20th, 6-8pm
Country, rock
Bethany Larson and The Bee's Knees, one of Twin Cities best kept secrets as declared by Twin Cities Metro, brings a preacher’s daughter from Austin, Minn. to the local music scene. In the process of recording her sophomore album she joined forces with the "Bee’s Knees" – her brother Chris Larson on guitar, keyboards and backing vocals, Sara Horishnyk on drums and Sam Johnson on bass. “…Bethany’s voice has evolved beautifully: as much Ella Fitzgerald and Juliette Greco as Emmylou Harris and Lucinda Williams. Bethany’s lyrics about love and heartbreak have a worldly sophistication and the band has fleshed out unique and sweet arrangements that both swoon and rock.” –Adam Levy, The Honeydogs

Wednesday, August 27th, 6-8pm

Erik Koskinen Country, folk

Erik Koskinen grew up in a rural, working class town in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. He got his first guitar from his father when he was 12 years old. Over the years he’s made a living as a carpenter, welder, snow blower, truck driver—the list goes on. But since he moved to Saint Paul he’s built a following as a guitarist (Molly Maher, Randy Weeks), songwriter, producer (Trampled by Turtles) and engineer. “America Theatre” (2014) is Erik's second album, the follow-up to the acclaimed Keep it to Yourself. “Erik Koskinen should be recognized as a masterful songwriter and rousing country singer..." - Chris Riemenschneider - Minneapolis Star Tribune

August 13, 2014, Wednesday - A Sip of Science at Aster Cafe

Time: 5:30pm

Location: Aster Cafe (River Room) 125 SE Main Street

August Sip of Science - Dynamic Bangladesh: Living in the Land of Superlatives

The impacts of climate change and sea level rise will disproportionately affect developing nations and low-lying coastal areas. Bangladesh is a country facing both of these challenges, having the world’s 7th largest population living amidst the vast, flat plains of the Ganges-Brahmaputra River delta. However, the first-order challenges that the country faces are met with an abundance of natural opportunity in this dynamic landscape.  For our August Sip of Science, researcher and professor Dr. Steve Goodbred will discuss this land, its people, and how their interactions may determine the fate of the region as demand on resources grows.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Steve Goodbred is an Associate Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.  His research focuses on coastal environments, particularly the low-lying landscapes built through the interaction of river and coastal processes. The sandy and muddy areas in which he has worked include Bangladesh, India, Peru, Vietnam, and Florida.

RSVP for Sip of Science  No cover; food and drink available for purchase.

A SIP OF SCIENCE bridges the gap between science and culture in a setting that bridges the gap between brain and belly.  Food, beer, and learning are on the menu in a happy hour forum that puts science in context through storytelling.

Time: 5:00pm - 7:00pm

Location: Republic, 221 Cedar Ave S

On Tuesday, August 12, Transit for Livable Communities welcomes you back to Republic for our third Transportation on Tap event of the year! Enjoy light appetizers on us and talk bike, walk, bus, and rail with other TLC members and friends. This month we'll dig into the topic of parking in the Twin Cities.

How do parking policies influence how we get around and how our neighborhoods develop? Who pays for free parking? How do parking spaces and placemaking initiatives intersect? Who is embracing bike parking? And how does parking in Minneapolis and Saint Paul compare to other cities nationally and internationally?

This Transportation on Tap, TLC has invited panelists from the City of Minneapolis, the Minneapolis Downtown Improvement Zone, and the City of Saint Paul to examine how our cities are thinking about parking. We'll explore policies, costs, demand, reform and innovation, ties to development and walkability, and more. TLC's Barb Thoman will moderate. Bring your questions for another lively conversation!

Featured Panel:
•Ben Shardlow, Director of Public Realm Initiatives, Minneapolis Downtown Improvement District
•Jason Wittenberg, Manager of Land Use, Design and Preservation, City of Minneapolis
•Sarah Zorn, Senior Project Manager, City of Saint Paul

Today: BRIAN JUST BAND + JIM O’NEILL

Brian Just Band
After releasing two contemplative folk EPs as a solo artist, Brian Just knew he needed to put together an eclectic band to reproduce the sounds for the new music he was hearing in his head. Enlisting some of the finest folk and jazz influenced talents in the Minneapolis music scene (including members of the Como Avenue Jug Band, The Brass Kings, Dan Israel and Corpse Reviver) the seven-piece Brian Just Band spent two years writing and recording their second full-length album Enlightenment released in June of 2013.

Jim O’Neill
Opener Jim O’Neill is a Twin Cities musician who plays regularly with local acts Brian Just Band (bassist/producer), Dan Israel (keyboards) and Emot (keyboards). He’ll step out from behind the keyboards to sing and play guitar as he returns to the Aster with bassist Justin Hartke (Sleep Study) & Peter Anderson (The Honeydogs, The Ocean Blue) to present an eclectic set of his originals.
