November 22, 2014, Saturday - The Cocktail Hour Opens at Guthrie Theater

Time: 7:30pm

Location: Guthrie Theater, McGuire Proscenium Stage, 818 Second Street South

An entertaining family reunion on the rocks.

When your family is in town for the holidays, we’ve got the perfect way to toast the season! With delightfully witty wordplay, A.R. Gurney’s The Cocktail Hour is a heartfelt comedy of manners that pits artistic pursuit against family loyalty. It’s the 1970s, and John arrives for dinner at his parents’ home carrying the script of his soon-to-be produced play depicting his uptight, upper-crust WASP family. Just as the martinis begin to flow, so do the revelations and recriminations – both funny and poignant. Directed by Maria Aitken (Broadway’s The 39 Steps), The Cocktail Hour is the perfect alternative holiday entertainment.

Runs thru January 04, 2015.

A career as a working musician and is one of those gigs that people look at and think, “How awesome would that be?” Well, Minneapolis based Tim Mahoney has been doing it his way for fifteen years now. What began as a side career with huge aspirations while Mahoney was waiting tables; has now blossomed into a full-fledged career. And make no mistake, the way that Mahoney hustles, it IS a job, but one he is very happy to have. To date, he’s sold over 100,000 units of his various releases between a solo career and his part as a member of The Blue Meenies. But Mahoney’s gig as a full-time musical artist is not just something he’s doing to serve himself. He has a rabid fan base, one that supports him religiously. And he also has the raw talent to win multiple awards year after year. In fact, Mahoney was featured in Rolling Stone Magazine in 2007 for their 40th anniversary issue when he won a Ray-Ban promotion. He’s also won or placed high in songwriting contests about fifteen times over the past decade.

November 21, 2014, Friday - The Story of a Book: Mary Gardner at The Loft

Time: 7:00pm

Location: The Loft at Open Book (Performance Hall), 1011 Washington Ave S

Novelist and Loft teaching artist Mary Gardner reads from her ebook A Very Little Cancer. She will be interviewed by her collaborators John Millar and Nancy Pickering on the story of how her book came to be.

Mary Gardner has been writing novels for almost 30 years, but she started teaching writing 50 years ago. (Combining the two is her great delight.) Her first novel, Keeping Warm, was published in 1987, followed by Milkweed, Boat People, winner of the Associated Writing Programs Award for the Novel in 1993, and Salvation Run. Starting in 2006, she worked with Richard “Deadeye” Hayes on his life story Outlaw Biker: My Life at Full Throttle, published in 2008.

John Millar has been a student at the Loft taking classes and weekend seminars on the novel, including classes from Mary Gardner. He is currently in the process of finishing his own novel, Bataan: To Walk With Giants, and hopes that once the revisions and edits are completed it will be published in 2015.

Nancy A. Pickering is a freelance graphic designer for print and web who also holds a computer programming certificate. Her niche is writing software documentation and user education materials for IT departments. She also is an associate at a firm in Chanhassen that makes smartphone apps for the financial industry. Nancy holds an MFA in Theater Design and was previously an Assistant Professor of Costume Design at universities in Texas and Florida.

November 20, 2014, Thursday - East Downtown Council Business Forum

Time: 11:30am to 1:00pm

Location: Meet Minneapolis, 250 Marquette Avenue South

The November 20 EDC Business Forum is “Beautiful and Safe: Urban Design and Programming in the Built Environment.”

Registration, lunch and networking starts at 11:30 a.m., with the EDC Update and guest presenters starting at Noon. Please RSVP by sending an email to info@edcmpls.org by no later than Monday, November 17, at Noon.

FORUM DESCRIPTION

Urbanism studies show that greening and safety catalyze local investment, visitor spending, environmental cost-savings, and increased public health vitality.  As East Downtown becomes increasingly redeveloped it is important that all of the stakeholders in our district become aware of best practices for urban design and safety in the built environment such that we engage these important benefits. One key existing partner that is already doing this work in Downtown is the Minneapolis Downtown Improvement District (the “DID”).

The Minneapolis Downtown Improvement District (DID) is a non-profit entity that maintains a higher standard of care and behavior throughout downtown. It was formed in early 2009 after 5+ years of formative planning and advocacy by the Minneapolis Downtown Business Community.

The DID’s mission is to support, preserve, create and enhance a vibrant, competitive and thriving downtown that attracts and retains businesses, employees, residents and visitors. To that end, the DID pursues several goals: to create/support a competitive and thriving downtown through effective provision of clean, green, safe and better services; to pool resources and bring more effective implementation of services and initiatives; to bring a sustainable funding source to long-term initiatives; and to create and sustain an ecosystem that encourages a thriving public space in support of retailers, businesses, employees, visitors and residents.

At this month’s business forum, Ben Shardlow, the Director of Public Realm Initiatives for the Minneapolis Downtown Council and the Downtown Improvement District, will discuss the overall work of the DID, specialized work of the Tactical Urbanism Initiative, and ways that EDC constituents can be aware and promote beauty and safety on our streets and in our open spaces.

In addition to Ben’s presentation, we will hear from three other guest speakers.  We will get an overall crime and safety report from The Minneapolis Police Department’s First Precinct Inspector Medaria Arradondo; Meet Minneapolis CEO Melvin Tennant will give us an overview of how Minnesota won the Super Bowl bid for 2018; and Mortenson Construction will provide a Viking’s Stadium construction update.

November 18, 2014, Tuesday - Opera on Screen at St. Anthony Main Theatre

Time: 7:00pm

Location: St. Anthony Main Theatre, 115 Main Street SE

Opera on Screen at the Film Society of Minneapolis/St. Paul: Don Carlo

Opera on Screen is a unique series featuring recorded performances from some of the world's most spectacular opera companies.

In the second half of the 16th century, a peace treaty between France and Spain is to be sealed by the marriage of the Princess Elizabeth of Valois, daughter of Henry II, and Don Carlos, son of Philipp II and heir of the Spanish throne.

When Don Carlos (Jonas Kaufmann) and her future spouse meet for the first time, they fall in love on sight, although they both were apprehensive over their marriage to a stranger. But their happiness does not last long, because the peace treaty arrangements have been altered: Henry II now intends to marry his daughter to King Philip himself. To ensure peace between France and Spain, Elizabeth consents, and lets Carlos devastated.

As ever in Verdi's masterpieces, Don Carlo's story takes its roots in the political and religious situation of Europe. Just like in a Racinian tragedy, the lovers' path is determined by a political situation which overwhelms them.

This dream cast gathers one of the most sought after tenors of the moment, Jonas Kaufmann, and the best Verdian singers on the operatic scene.

Also playing: Sunday, Nov 23 1:00 pm

Tickets are available through the Film Society. $20 Regular; $15 Film Society Members

November 14, 2014, Friday - Pianist Matthew McCright to Perform at MacPhail

Time: 8:00pm

Location: MacPhail Center for Music, 501 2nd Street South

Program titled “Contemplations” features music by Olivier Messiaen and Frederic Rzewski

Twin Cities-based pianist Matthew McCright will perform a program titled “Contemplations” on Friday, November 14, at 8 p.m. The performance will take place at Antonello Hall at MacPhail Center for Music, located at 501 South 2nd Street in Minneapolis. Tickets for the performance are $20 general admission/ $10 students/ $5 for MacPhail students and will be available at the door.

The program features music by Olivier Messiaen and Frederic Rzewski (pronounced zheff-skee), both considered titans of the 20th century and known for their large scale piano works and distinct musical styles. Messiaen’s “Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant-Jésus” (20 Contemplations of the Infant Jesus) evokes the composer’s own contemplations of the vastness of creation as represented in the birth of infant Jesus. McCright will perform a large selection of these vignettes that encompass various piano innovations such as rapid cascades of chords, extreme dynamics, color-based harmony and melody that Messiaen included in this monumental work. The second half of the program will feature the epic “North American Ballads” by Rzewski. Based on the protest music of the 20th century labor movement, the four ballads offer a powerful glimpse into the collective social consciousness of American history. Utilizing improvisation, jazz, minimalism and a collage of virtuosic piano effects —complete with a pianistic-cotton mill, which requires the pianist to use his entire body to execute—the piece is a feast for the ears and the eyes. “North American Ballads” is considered a seminal work in the lexicon of contemporary music.

“The pieces on this program are not simple piano pieces in a bland style such as a sonata or prelude, but rather explore ideas that are transcendent and require an element of physicality and virtuosity by the performer,” said McCright. “Both of these pieces are mammoth works and among the pinnacles of piano repertoire—very palatable and pleasing to the audience.”

McCright will also lead a master class and workshop with MacPhail students on Sunday, November 16, at 2 p.m. This event takes place in Room 126 at MacPhail. Tickets are available for $5 for the general public and are free to MacPhail students.

Tonight:  David Berkeley + Adam Svec

David Berkeley is an evocative singer-songwriter with a soulful, velvet, tone-bending voice coupled with an endearing stage presence. His literate, romantic songs are enhanced by his finger picking guitar style.

Adam Svec plays lo-fi midwest pop music that leans hard on lyrics and melodies. Taking advantage of the peaks and valleys of tremolo, as well as the patience of reverb, Svec makes good use of the sonic space offered through old guitars and amplifiers. Recommended if you like Low, Elliott Smith, and David Bazan.
