Location:  Mill City Museum, 704 South 2nd Street

Fee: Programs included with museum admission of $11 adults, $9 seniors and college students, $6 children ages 6-17; free for MNHS members.

The postwar years of the late 1940s and 1950s ushered in a new era of kitchen conveniences. Did housewives want these easy-to-use products and appliances or were food companies creating a market for their goods by exaggerating the drudgery of home cooking? Using the example of the cake mix, this demonstration will answer this question, highlighting the dramatic changes in cooking habits during this era and how those innovations affect our lives today. Visitors will learn about food history, sample cakes made from scratch and from mix and take home a recipe.

The Blarney Blast Party at The Normandy Inn & Suites is the official Minneapolis St. Patrick's Day party.

The history of the parade dates back to 1969 when Duff’s Bar and the Bradford’s Pub initiated the first St. Patrick’s Day Parade for Minneapolis. It was a short caravan between the two pubs, and ironically, was prompted by friendly jibing of some gentlemen of other ethnic backgrounds. The first parade consisted of one float, provided by the Sons and Daughters of Ireland. It was a social event, including wild members of the Minnesota Vikings Football team riding motorcycles into Duff’s bar to commemorate the parade.

March 13, 2015, Friday - “How Futures Research Might Lead Us to a More Resilient Mississippi River” at McKnight Foundation

Time:  8:00am – 9:30am

Location: McKnight Foundation, 710 Second Street South, Suite 400

“How Futures Research Might Lead Us to a More Resilient Mississippi River”

Many of us consider our work to be in service of a “big-picture” better future for the Mississippi River and Minnesota’s natural resources. And yet…..How many emails await your attention right now? How many meetings do you have between now and next Wednesday? Though we may wish to contribute to a healthier long-term future for our beloved natural resources, many spend most of each day attending to short-term, immediate needs. Do we miss strategic and creative opportunities when we are scrambling to make it through each day’s to-do list, especially now that the pace of environmental change is so rapid? Futurists investigate how social, economic and technological developments are shaping the future—and apply anticipatory thinking to society’s greatest challenges. Might taking a “futurist” approach to our work help enrich environmental protection, planning and policy efforts?

Join us for this thought-provoking conversation that will invite you to think far outside your daily routine. Presenter George Kubik is President of the Anticipatory Futures Group, LLC, a former Strategic Futurist and Assistant Regional Director for Strategic Planning with the U.S. Government, and is President of the Minnesota Chapter of the World Future Society. Light breakfast provided. Free.

RSVP to lark_weller@nps.gov. Please be prepared to sign in at McKnight's front desk and get a visitor pass.

March 11, 2015, Wednesday - A Sip of Science at Aster Cafe

Time: 5:30pm

Location: Aster Cafe (River Room) 125 SE Main Street

February Sip of Science - The Fargo-Moorhead Flood Diversion Project

RSVP for Sip of Science

With Miguel Wong, Barr Engineering, and Chris Ellis, St. Anthony Falls Laboratory, University of Minnesota

For decades the cities of Fargo, North Dakota, and Moorhead, Minnesota, have been plagued by flooding from the Red River of the North and its tributaries.  As part of a team of consultants hired by the two cities, Barr worked with the USACE St. Paul District to develop and compare solutions to the problem—and provide relief to an area that, in the past 16 years, has experienced six of the 10 largest flood events since 1897. Expedited after the flood of record in 2009, the fast-track feasibility study for this large and complex undertaking was completed in just three years, and the project is now in final design. The ultimate goal of the project is construction of a 36-mile-long diversion channel to direct floodwater around the Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan area. This presentation will highlight work on two unique project features: the Maple aqueduct and spillway structures, and the artificially constructed meandering low flow channel.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Born and raised in Peru, Miguel Wong obtained his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering there. He earned his master’s in hydraulic engineering from the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education in the Netherlands, and his PhD from the University of Minnesota. His doctoral work at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory yielded a proposed modification to a well-established bedload-transport equation that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers subsequently incorporated into its HEC-RAS modeling software. Miguel, who now has more than 20 years of experience, has acquired the last nine as a senior water resources engineer at Barr Engineering Co., consulting on hydrologic modeling, hydraulic design, river-mechanics analysis, and water management.

Chris Ellis is a Senior Research Associate at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory. With over 30 years of experience, Chris is engaged in fundamental and applied water and wind related research. He is one of the Lab’s primary resources for experimental and measurement design and implementation including scientific/engineering systems design, facility design and fabrication, and high speed automated data acquisition and analysis.
