March 15, 2017, Wednesday - Sip of Science at Aster Cafe

Time: 5:30pm

Location: Aster Cafe (River Room) 125 SE Main Street

March Sip of Science: Not Science, but sciences...and why it matters RSVP
Dr. Alan Love, Associate Professor of Philosophy, University of Minnesota, and Director of the Minnesota Center for Philosophy of Science

Most people talk as if Science (capital "S") was a single thing. Although potentially harmless in everyday conversation, it also can lead to problematic inferences. These include an over reliance on the sciences, assuming they answer directly all of life’s interesting questions or rejecting outright whole areas of scientific knowledge that appear to conflict with other commitments (e.g., religious, political, social, ethnic, etc.). Join us as philosopher Dr. Alan Love will raises questions of this kind in order to have a discussion about why talking about the sciences rather than Science matters.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Alan Love is an associate professor of philosophy at the University of Minnesota and director of the Minnesota Center for Philosophy of Science. His research focuses on conceptual issues in evolutionary and developmental biology. He uses a combination of approaches to investigate a variety of philosophical questions: conceptual change, explanatory pluralism, the structure of evolutionary theory, reductionism, the nature of historical science, and interdisciplinary epistemology.

A SIP OF SCIENCE bridges the gap between science and culture in a setting that bridges the gap between brain and belly.  Food, beer, and learning are on the menu in a happy hour forum that puts science in context through storytelling.

No cover; food and drink available for purchase.

March 14, 2017, Tuesday - Dusty Bottles Charity Wine Tastings at North Loop Wine & Spirits

Time: 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM

Location: North Loop Wine & Spirits, 218 North Washington Avenue

THE DUSTY BOTTLES CHARITY WINE TASTING
Presented by Twin Cities Wine Education

In the summer of 2016 Twin Cities Wine Education received a donation of a significant amount of wine from one of the premier collections in the city, owned by a well known family going through the settlement of an estate. Much of the best of the best was consumed years ago, but a good pile of wines that should be incredible were left.

This collection will form the basis of a series of wine tastings and mini-classes throughout 2017 and into 2018. The Dusty Bottles Charity Wine Tastings will bring a selection of these wines out from the cellar to be opened, decanted, and enjoyed while learning a bit about all of them.

Will the wines be drinkable? Sampling a few of the wines in the collection I have to be honest that some are over the hill. But as they say in the wine business, at a certain point of aging wine there is no such thing a great vintage, only great bottles. A few of the wines I've had from the collection have been head-spinningly good, and rank as some of the best I've ever had. Yes, it will be a roll of the wine dice, but with the proceeds going to charity we can rest well in the fact that we're popping the corks for the right reasons!

For part one of the Dusty Bottles Charity Tasting we'll be donating 100% of the proceeds to DARTS, a community-based nonprofit that connects people to services and partnerships that improve their quality of life, help them age well, and enables them to engage in their community. Click here to learn more about DARTS.
