Riverfront Quest Family Walking Tour

Future dates: July 15, August 19

Explore the Minneapolis riverfront with a family treasure hunt. Make a quest journal from 10:30-11 am and then solve rhyming riddles, search for hidden boxes and discover the stories of Minneapolis' history along the way from 11 am to noon. The tour is designed for ages 6-11.

The 60-minute tour includes no more than one mile of moderately paced walking on uneven terrain. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.

Our partner and neighbor the American Academy of Neurology will be giving away bike helmets to the first 1,000 market visitors in an effort to raise awareness about brain safety and help prevent head injuries in Minnesota. In acknowledgement of the day, Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges has proclaimed Saturday, June 17, 2017, Brain Health Awareness Day in the city, so join us and over 60 local farmers, food makers and artisans - rain or shine - for a unique outdoor shopping experience and celebrate Brain Health Day!

Mill City Cooks

Learn how to cook market meals in our free, chef-led cooking demo, Mill City Cooks, offered every Saturday in the train shed patio at 10:30. This Saturday, guest chef Austin Bartold will be making a seasonal meal. Austin is the executive chef at Waite House Neighborhood Center and a member of the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe Indian Reservation. With more than ten years of culinary experience in the Twin Cities and a rich culture of using food to promote wellness, Austin focuses his cooking on healthy, seasonal meals and using food as medicine.
 
Plus, our kids’ tables at the demo always feature coloring sheets and other engaging activities, giving adults some free time to relax with a cup of coffee and learn tips and easy seasonal recipes from our market chefs. Downtown Minneapolis Riverfront Walking Tour

Minneapolis’ history as the flour milling capital of the world is well-known…but here’s your chance to explore that history in real depth. We’ll walk both sides of the downtown Minneapolis riverfront, and explore historic buildings, structures, and landscapes as well as new developments along the river.

We’ll visit and learn about Saint Anthony Falls and its lock and dam, the Saint Anthony Main complex, the Stone Arch Bridge, the Post Office, the Guthrie Theater, Main Street SE and West River Parkway, the Water Power and Mill Ruins parks, and the east- and west-side milling districts and remaining historic buildings, including the Pillsbury A Mill and the Mill City Museum. Discover how the city and its riverfront have evolved over the past 165 years—and continue to do so.

This tour walks about two miles; the tour guide is Aaron Rubenstein.

The 2017 Twin Cities River Rats shows are scheduled for 7pm Thursday nights through August, and take place at 1628 West River Road (between the Plymouth and Broadway bridges). These are free events!

The Twin Cities Rivers Rats describe their show as an aquatic Broadway musical featuring multiple water ski acts choreographed to music and built around a theme. Facebook

6:30pm – Development show: Our members under the age of 18 and our new members get the opportunity to perform for the crowd before jumping into the “big” show.

7:00pm – The Big Show! The ski show is a 1 hour long themed-show. In between daring and beautiful acts on water, a storyline unfolds. We encourage audience participation and love applause!

8:00pm – Photos! Photo opportunities with the cast of the show, visit with the skiers, and even take a ride in our “triple-rig” boat (for a price!)

Hennepin Island Hydropower Tour

Future dates: June 29; July 13 and 27; August 10 and 24

Explore the history of waterpower at St. Anthony Falls, including rare access to Xcel Energy's Hennepin Island Hydroelectric Plant. During the early 20th century, more than two dozen mills and hydroelectric plants used the waterpower from St. Anthony Falls, today just one is left. On this tour, a Mill City Museum guide will lead participants to Hennepin Island and Father Hennepin Bluffs Park, including special access to the power plant. Along the way, participants will learn about the historic uses of waterpower at the falls for flour milling, sawmilling and hydroelectricity, the role of hydroelectricity in Xcel Energy's green energy and energy efficiency initiatives and the future of waterpower on the Minneapolis riverfront.

The Hennepin Island Hydropower Tour is presented by Mill City Museum in partnership with Xcel Energy.

All guests must sign a waiver before taking the tour. This tour includes about 1.5 miles of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces, as well as climbing up and down several flights of stairs. Some historic locations on this tour are not wheelchair accessible.
