Film Festival

A series of 4 festive movie nights, with a large format LED screen to enable easy viewing before sundown. Scheduled films to be announced, but will include popular titles as well as features by local filmmakers.

This Commons-Produced event is the first ever designated as a BYO event, enabling patrons to bring and consume their own wine or beer in the park. Settle in for an evening of film with friends and a picnic.

June 29, 2017, Thursday - Twin Cities River Rats

The 2017 Twin Cities River Rats shows are scheduled for 7pm Thursday nights through August, and take place at 1628 West River Road (between the Plymouth and Broadway bridges). These are free events!

The Twin Cities Rivers Rats describe their show as an aquatic Broadway musical featuring multiple water ski acts choreographed to music and built around a theme. Facebook

Show Schedule:

6:30pm – Development show: Our members under the age of 18 and our new members get the opportunity to perform for the crowd before jumping into the “big” show.

7:00pm – The Big Show! The ski show is a 1 hour long themed-show. In between daring and beautiful acts on water, a storyline unfolds. We encourage audience participation and love applause!

8:00pm – Photos! Photo opportunities with the cast of the show, visit with the skiers, and even take a ride in our “triple-rig” boat (for a price!)

Hennepin Island Hydropower Tour

Future dates: July 13 and 27; August 10 and 24

Explore the history of waterpower at St. Anthony Falls, including rare access to Xcel Energy's Hennepin Island Hydroelectric Plant. During the early 20th century, more than two dozen mills and hydroelectric plants used the waterpower from St. Anthony Falls, today just one is left. On this tour, a Mill City Museum guide will lead participants to Hennepin Island and Father Hennepin Bluffs Park, including special access to the power plant. Along the way, participants will learn about the historic uses of waterpower at the falls for flour milling, sawmilling and hydroelectricity, the role of hydroelectricity in Xcel Energy's green energy and energy efficiency initiatives and the future of waterpower on the Minneapolis riverfront.

The Hennepin Island Hydropower Tour is presented by Mill City Museum in partnership with Xcel Energy.

All guests must sign a waiver before taking the tour. This tour includes about 1.5 miles of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces, as well as climbing up and down several flights of stairs. Some historic locations on this tour are not wheelchair accessible.

Join us for an evening of community, canoeing and ice cream! Stop by anytime between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. for a free introductory canoe ride on the Mississippi River, then grab some free ice cream and check out the other activities at our Stormwater Park and Learning Center.

This family-friendly event is great for kids and adults of all ages (though you must be at least 30 lbs. in order to fit the provided life jackets). In addition to learning to paddle on the river, participants will also have opportunities to learn about the Mississippi River’s history, water quality, plants, animals and more.

National Park Service rangers from the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area will be joined by Mississippi Park Connection staff and guides from Wilderness Inquiry to lead the canoe rides.

Attendees are advised to use on-street parking, as the MWMO’s parking lot will be off-limits for the event. Bike parking, a Nice Ride station and bus transit options are also available in the area.

The City of Minneapolis, Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board (MPRB) and master development team (United Properties, THOR Development and First Avenue Productions) are hosting a series of public meetings at which community members will be able to provide input to inform the plan for the UHT site. The general goal of this late June pair of meetings will be to discuss the riverfront destination, existing structures and public space amenities before the team plans to bring forward conceptual design drafts in August.

All are welcome at both meetings; the Tuesday meeting will have snacks, and the Thursday open house will have food and supervised children’s activities.

Disasters of the Riverfront Walking Tour

Take a guided walking tour of the St. Anthony Falls milling district and learn about some of the most tragic disasters in Minnesota history. Hear the stories of fires, floods, explosions, collapses and other natural and human-created calamities. Visitors will learn about the Eastman Tunnel Collapse in 1869, the Great Conflagration of 1893, bridge collapses in 1859 and 2007, numerous fires and massive landscape changes that shaped the Twin Cities.

This tour includes about 1.5 miles of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.
