December 21, 2017, Thursday - Jess Hirsch: Emotional Platings Book Release & Artist Talk at A-Mill Artist Lofts

Time: 7 pm

Location:A-Mill Artist Lofts301 SE Main Street

The Soap Factory presents: Artist Talk and Book Launch for Jess Hirsch: Emotional Platings

During the month of October, Rethinking Public Spaces artist, Jess Hirsch brought her project Emotional Platings to Willmar, Delano and Cambridge, Minnesota. Emotional Platings is a series of picnic kits from trees that heal specific emotions, identified in the Bach Flower Essence philosophy developed by Edward Bach in the 1940s. Each picnic kit includes a blanket, servingware crafted by the artist, a notecard with conversational prompts and a notebook.

The public was invited to check out a specific kit in advance, asked to bring food to share and then was paired with a stranger based on the emotion they had selected. Having grown up in rural Minnesota, Hirsch hoped to explore the rural/urban divide by traveling to these three rural towns throughout Minnesota, asking people to check out a kit and explore emotion together.

Jess Hirsch: Emotional Platings is one of several public projects being presented by The Soap Factory as a part of Here & There. Here & There is The Soap Factory's out-of-building programming while the building undergoes renovation.

December 20, 2017, Wednesday - Preserve Minneapolis Morning Forum at Mill City Museum

Time: 8 am

Location: Mill City Museum, ADM Room

Morning Forum: What's your favorite spot in MPLS?

Ever wanted to get involved in one of our Morning Forums? Here's your chance!

This month we're hosting our annual invitational where you get to lead. Our question: What's your favorite historic spot in Minneapolis?

When you’re showing off the city, what do you show? A particular building? A favorite street? It doesn’t have to be officially historic, just something that embodies this fine city’s culture/history/spirit/general excellence.

Feel free to post your suggestion in the comments of our Facebook Event or email them to social@preserveminneapolis.org.

Please include the name/location of your favorite spot, why it matters to you, and a photo if at all possible. You'll have the chance to get up and speak at the Morning Forum to tell the audience in your own words all about your selection. If you can't make it we're happy to do this on your behalf.

Come alone or bring a friend, the choice is yours.

This year's guests include renowned singer-songwriter Charlie Parr, spoken word poet, playwright and community activist Saymoukda Vongsay, storyteller and podcast host Levi Weinhagen, experiemental classical violinist and torch singerLOTT, and singer of sad songs on a happy instrument Katy Vernon. They'll perform and engage in brief conversations with the Dissonance hosts about their art and how they experience dissonance in their lives.

Come together in a fun, alcohol-free environment with good food, good music, storytelling and community-building. Find resources from the community on how to live a balanced life whether you're in search of yoga classes, mental health services, support for eating disorders, or just more folks who don't find the holidays especially merry.

Admission is free but space is limited, so reservations are strongly encouraged. We pay our artists, we don't charge our guests. All donations made to Dissonance go to supporting this mission, so if you'd like to support us you can make donations on the Dissonance website or at the event.
