January 1, 2018, Monday - NT Live: YOUNG MARX at St. Anthony Main Theatre

Time: 7:00pm

Location: St. Anthony Main Theatre, 115 Main Street SE

NT Live at the Film Society of Minneapolis/St. Paul

National Theatre Live: YOUNG MARX

Rory Kinnear (The Threepenny Opera, Penny Dreadful, Othello) is Marx and Oliver Chris (Twelfth Night,Green Wing) is Engels, in this new comedy written by Richard Bean and Clive Coleman. Broadcast live from The Bridge Theatre, London, the production is directed by Nicholas Hytner and reunites the creative team behind Broadway and West End hit comedy One Man, Two Guvnors.

1850, and Europe’s most feared terrorist is hiding in Dean Street, Soho. Broke, restless and horny, the thirty-two-year-old revolutionary is a frothing combination of intellectual brilliance, invective, satiric wit, and child-like emotional illiteracy. Creditors, spies, rival revolutionary factions and prospective seducers of his beautiful wife all circle like vultures.

His writing blocked, his marriage dying, his friend Engels in despair at his wasted genius, his only hope is a job on the railway. But there’s still no one in the capital who can show you a better night on the piss than Karl Heinrich Marx.

December 30, 2017, Saturday - Washburn A Mill Tour at Mill City Museum

Time: 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Location: Mill City Museum704 South 2nd Street

Washburn A Mill Tour

Take an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building. A guide will take visitors into the building's many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the building functioned during its peak flour milling years, and the many changes to the building over time. This is the only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building and the only chance to see some of its nonpublic spaces.

Tour highlights include:

  • The dramatic story of the 1878 Washburn A Mill explosion, and the other dangers that mill workers faced on a daily basis
  • "The Octopus," a large machine that directed wheat into nine storage bins
  • The Humphrey Manlift, a vertical conveyor belt that carried workers from floor to floor
  • The Rail Corridor where hundreds of boxcars arrived each day to unload wheat and carry away flour
  • Millstone plaza, originally paved with retired millstones and the location for lunchtime concerts by the Washburn-Crosby employee band in the 1920s
  • Evidence of the three major fires that have damaged the building in 1878, 1928 and 1991
  • The East Engine House, once home to a two-story steam engine, has been remodeled into two classrooms, while preserving the original railroad car pulling machinery

The tour includes no more than 1 mile of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.

December 29, 2017, Friday - Live Music at Aster Cafe

Time: 9:00pm  Cover: $7

Location: Aster Cafe, 125 Main Stree SE

Tonight:  Tony Rook Band (Bluegrass)

http://www.tonyrookmusic.com/

Born and raised in North Carolina, Tony Rook is no bluegrass novice. He picked up his first guitar at the age of 12, rocking out in the local music scene before returning to his bluegrass roots. Tony, now a multi-instrumentalist, describes his music as “incredibly personal.” His songs convey real-life experiences and hardships through soulful lyrical arrangements and intricate guitar riffs. His album “Labor of Love,” released in 2000 with Rook & Wood, garnered much recognition in the bluegrass community and inspired Tony to continue to push his musical boundaries. In his debut solo project “The Road Back Home,” released in March 2016, Tony showcases his singer/songwriter skills with eight original tracks of contemporary bluegrass featuring award-winning artists such as Becky Buller, Matt Flinner, and Dick Kimmel & Co. Tony Rook Band members are Brent Fuqua on mandolin and vocals, Terry Johnson on bass and vocals, and Graham Sones on banjo and vocals. Brent brings a modern approach to his playing, his breaks in particular. He’s a strong instrumentalist whose creativity, enthusiasm and energy helps drive TRB. As its bassist, Terry is TRB’s backbone and brings those high tenor harmonies. Graham brings a driving banjo to the quartet. He’s extremely versatile and can easily shift from melodic fiddle tunes to a straight-ahead Scruggs style.
