June 27, 2018, Wednesday - 3rd Annual 'Share the River Nordeast' Scheduled for

Wilderness Inquiry canoe on the Mississippi River.

Public invited to experience the Mississippi River in an evening of community, canoeing and cookies.

The Mississippi Watershed Management Organization invites community members to a family-friendly evening of cookies and canoeing on the Mississippi River on Wednesday, June 27, 2018, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The third annual Share the River Nordeast event offers visitors the chance to take a free introductory canoe ride on the Mississippi River with experienced guides. Attendees can also enjoy a complimentary cookie from North Minneapolis nonprofit bakery Cookie Cart and tour indoor and outdoor exhibits at the MWMO’s Stormwater Park and Learning Center in Northeast Minneapolis.

“Paddling the Mississippi River is an amazing experience, and Share the River Nordeast offers a fun, safe, and family-friendly way to connect with this natural wonder,” said MWMO Executive Director Doug Snyder. “The river is an extremely valuable resource, and we want people to see that it is something worth protecting.”

Canoe trips will be led by National Park Service rangers and staff from the Mississippi Park Connection and Wilderness Inquiry. In addition to learning how to paddle on the river, participants will have opportunities to learn about the river’s history, water quality, plants, animals and more.

The event is open to kids and adults of all ages. Visitors who wish to take a canoe ride must be at least 30 pounds in order to fit the provided life jackets.

Attendees are advised to use on-street parking, as the MWMO’s parking lot will be off-limits for the event. Bike parking, a Nice Ride station and bus transit options are also available in the area.

June 25, 2018, Monday - Beyond Hotdish: The Quiet Sophistication of Northern Food at Walker Art Center

Beyond Hotdish: The Quiet Sophistication of Northern Food

Time: 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Location: Walker Art Center, 725 Vineland Place

On June 25, 2018, some of the most influential voices in the food of our region will gather together on the Walker Art Center auditorium stage to talk about Northern Food. Twin Cities food writer Steve Hoffman (expanding on an article, “What is Northern Food?” that he recently wrote for Artful Livingmagazine) will host a discussion with some of the brightest lights currently shining in our food culture:

  • Lynne Rossetto Kasper (legendary host of American Public Media’s The Splendid Table)
  • Alex Roberts (chef and visionary behind the iconic Alma Restaurant)
  • Ann Kim (James Beard finalist and owner/chef of Young Joni, Pizzeria Lola and Hello Pizza)
  • Beth Dooley (James Beard Award winner and coauthor of 2018’s Best American Cookbook, The Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen)
  • Yia Vang (chef and owner of Union Kitchen and passionate spokesperson for Hmong culture and cuisine)
  • Beth Kracklauer (Food & Drinks editor at the Wall Street Journal)

Among the topics to be explored: What does it mean that we are newly a national food destination? What, actually, is a regional cuisine and what does ours look like—from the inside and the outside? How do we get past the clichés we still tell ourselves about a cuisine made up of bland Northern European survival food? How might a definition of Northern Food include cuisines as varied as Anishinaabe, German, Norwegian, African American, Ecuadorian, Somali, and Hmong? To what extent are we still bound by the rules of place—which here include what they have always included: fertile glacial soil, abundant fresh water, proximity to wild land, and the constraints of northern latitudes?

Please come join us. Let’s talk. Let’s move beyond hotdish.

  • 5-6: Cash bar, conversation, and light snacks
  • 6-8: Keynote by Alex Roberts followed by panel discussion and audience questions
  • 8-9: Mingling, cocktails and food at Esker Grove

Tickets are $9.00 and available for purchase here: www.sjrhoffman.com
