Poetry with a Purpose: Amir Sulaiman + the 2018 Be Heard Team

TruArtSpeaks is excited to announce that internationally-renowned poet Amir Sulaiman will be performing as part of the organization’s annual Sendoff show this June.

Each year, the six highest scoring poets from the Be Heard MN Youth Poetry Slam Series form a team that represents the state at the Brave New Voices international youth poetry slam festival. They write and practice together all spring, and the Sendoff is a chance for the whole community to hear their work one last time before BNV.

This year, the Sendoff will feature performances from the team, their coaches (Michael Lee and Hieu Minh Nguyen) and a very special guest, poet Amir Sulaiman:

Amir Sulaiman is a poet, recording artist, Harvard Fellow, actor, screen writer and producer born in Rochester, New York. His poems cross subjects of love, tragedy as well as what it means to reconcile humanity with the unprecedented trials of modernity. He has performed his works across the US as well as many other countries including England, Belgium, Senegal, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Australia, Iran and the Netherlands, and continues to tour world-wide. Amir was first introduced to a National audience in 2005 when he was featured for two seasons on Russell Simmons' groundbreaking series Def Poetry Jam on HBO.

$10 advance, $12 at the door. Group rates available.
