August 14, 2019, Wednesday - Luminous Current — Art Unveiling and Community Reception at Guthrie

Time: 7p -9p

Location: Guthrie Theater

Luminous Current — Art Unveiling and Community Reception

In 2018, the Guthrie received an Arts Access grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board that allowed us to further our collaboration with Juxtaposition Arts — the teen-staffed creative development agency in North Minneapolis — and develop a work of art for the Guthrie's Pohlad Lobby.

We invite you to join us for the unveiling of Luminous Current, a stunning light-based art installation on Level Nine.

This free community event will include the following:
• Pop-up boutique of artwork by Juxtaposition Arts
• Video presentation about the making of Luminous Current
• Facilitated Q&A session with the artists

All are welcome, and we hope you see you there!

---
LUMINOUS CURRENT (2019) was created by Juxtaposition Arts and designed by D’Angelo Raymond and Temesgen Besha.

---
Juxtaposition Arts develops community by engaging and employing young urban artists in hands-on education initiatives that create pathways to self-sufficiency while actualizing creative power. http://juxtapositionarts.org/

August 14, 2019, Wednesday - Mill City Live at Mill City Museum

Time: 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Location: Mill City Museum, 704 S 2nd Street

Mill City Live: Charanga Tropical

On Aug. 14, enjoy music from Charanga Tropical. Charanga Tropical performs as a "charanga," an instrumentation that combines violins, flute, vocals, and full Latin rhythm section that dates back to the roots of Cuban music. Charanga’s specialty is danzón, a style that was greatly influenced by French refugees who came to Cuba in the early 19th century. As the cultures merged, danzón came into being in the late 1800s and became very popular in Cuba.

Danzón mixes the serious sophistication of classical music with the syncopation of Cuban rhythms. It is a complex sound, rich in harmony, fantastic for listening and superb for dancing. In 2015, the Minneapolis-based Latin band became the first American group ever to be invited to perform at Cuba's International Danzón Festival.

Food and drink will be available for purchase from D'Amico. Tickets include admission to the museum from 4 to 9 pm.

Mill City Live is made possible by presenting sponsor, General Mills, and media partner, City Pages.

August 13, 2019, Tuesday - Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam Public Meeting at Mill City Museum

Time: 6:00-8:00pm

Location: Mill City Museum, 704 S. 2nd Street

Public Meeting: Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock Disposition Study

The St. Paul District Corps of Engineers is planning to conduct public meetings for the Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam Disposition study in August 2019.

- The first public meeting will be on Tuesday, August 13th, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Mill City Museum, 704 S. 2nd Street, Minneapolis, MN.

- The second public meeting will be on Monday, August 19th, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Michael Dowling school, 3900 W. River Parkway, Minneapolis, MN.

Disposition studies examine the benefits and costs of continuing to operate Federal projects which are no longer serving their authorized purposes. The navigation operations at Upper St. Anthony falls lock and dam ceased on 9 June 2015 by order of Section 2010 of the Water Resources Reform and Redevelopment Act of 2014. Since that time, the lock has been operated only for flood mitigation and visitor tours.

The Upper St. Anthony Falls Disposition study will look at three main alternatives: 1) No action, continue operating it as it is presently, 2) deauthorize all remaining Federal purposes, and dispose of the Federal property, and 3) retain those features of the project required to continue Corps operations for flood mitigation while deauthorizing and disposing of other features of the project. Only the U.S. Congress can deauthorize the purposes of the Federal project.

The Corps will also be seeking public input on a) maintaining or improving the human environment at Upper St. Anthony Falls, b) maintaining or improving the natural environment at Upper St. Anthony Falls, and c) maintaining or improving recreational opportunities at Upper St. Anthony Falls.

An official notice regarding these meetings and compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act will be posted in the Federal Register and a further public notice will be issued in late July, 2019.

The public meetings and written comments help to define the scope of an Environmental Assessment and guide the scope of the disposition study. A draft disposition study report for Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam will be available in spring 2020. A separate study for Lower St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam and Lock and Dam 1 will start in approximately December 2020, and a separate series of public meetings will be planned in early 2021.

For more information on the studies, please visit their website at:https://www.mvp.usace.army.mil/MplsLocksDisposition/

August 12, 2019, Monday - Hippocrates Cafe at MacPhail

Time: 4 PM – 5 PM

Location: MacPhail Center for Music, 501 S 2nd Sreet

Hippocrates Cafe

A live performance that uses actors and musicians to explore healthcare topics through story and song. Each show has a theme (such as aging, cancer, influenza, memory loss) that is explored through poetry, short story, essay, excerpt, letter, historical document and music. The performances intend to breathe life into complex, difficult topics in ways that are thoughtful, respectful and revelatory.

It is not a “prescriptive” show; it does not attempt to tell listeners what to do or how to think or how to live healthier lives. Rather, it allows audience members to be moved by beautiful, poignant words and music that at once educate and entertain—and heal. The tone of the show is warm as opposed to being “coldly” scientific.
