August 18, 2019, Sunday - West Bank Walking Tour with the Mill City Museum

Time: 1:00pm - 3:00pm

Location: Carlson School of Management, 321 19th Avenue S

West Bank Walking Tour

For more than 150 years, the West Bank neighborhood has been a haven for immigrants from all over the world and home to a thriving arts scene, including the famous folk and blues scene of the 1960s.

In the 1960s and 1970s, the neighborhood became home to college students, artists, and citizens who successfully resisted urban renewal plans that threatened to destroy the character of the neighborhood. The legacies of welcoming newcomers and supporting the arts continue today. The tour will visit some iconic watering holes and tour participants will hear from neighborhood insiders.

This tour includes 1.5 miles of moderately-paced walking on uneven terrain. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility. Some historic locations on this tour offer limited accessibility.

Time: 1:00pm

Location: Mill City Museum, 704 S. 2nd Street

Washburn A Mill Tour

Take an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building.

A guide will take visitors into the building's many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the building functioned during its peak flour-milling years, and the many changes to the building over time.

This is the only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building and the only chance to see some of its non-public spaces.

Tour highlights include:

  • The dramatic story of the 1878 Washburn A Mill explosion, and the other dangers that mill workers faced on a daily basis
  • "The Octopus," a large machine that directed wheat into nine storage bins
  • The Humphrey Manlift, a vertical conveyor belt that carried workers from floor to floor
  • The Rail Corridor where hundreds of boxcars arrived each day to unload wheat and carry away flour
  • Millstone Plaza, originally paved with retired millstones and the location for lunchtime concerts by the Washburn-Crosby employee band in the 1920s
  • Evidence of the three major fires that damaged the building in 1878, 1928, and 1991
  • The East Engine House, which was once home to a two-story steam engine, has been remodeled into two classrooms, while preserving the original railroad car-pulling machinery

The tour includes no more than 1 mile of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.

August 17, 2019, Saturday - Greatest Preservation Project: Public Waterfront Bus Tour

Time: 10 am – 12 noon

Location: Parade Parking Lot, 400 Kenwood Parkway

Preserve Minneapolis presents: Greatest Preservation Project: Public Waterfront Bus Tour

Minneapolis is the City of Lakes, Creeks, Ponds and one mighty river. Almost all waterfront in Minneapolis is public land (or soon will be). It is a remarkable story of the preservation for public use of the city’s most distinguishing natural features. How did it happen? This tour will investigate as much waterfront as can be squeezed into two hours on a comfy bus, with a couple stops. The tour will begin near the first body of water acquired by the Board of Park Commissioners when it was created in 1883, Loring Pond, and then include the Chain of Lakes, Minnehaha Falls, a section of the West River Parkway before returning to the starting point via one of the smaller water acquisitions in south Minneapolis, Powderhorn Lake.

The tour guide is David Smith, who is the author of a history of the Minneapolis park system, City of Parks: The Story of Minneapolis Parks, as well as historical profiles of individual Minneapolis parks for the website of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, minneapolisparks.org. Dave also writes about parks at his own website, minneapolisparkhistory.com. He is still writing a history of Minnehaha Falls, a biography of landscape architect H.W.S. Cleveland and a collection of stories about little-known Minneapolitans. $12.

Bailey and Cage are each nationally recognized spoken word performance artists, and founders of countless collectives, organizations, radio shows, and have traveled widely to areas such as England, Mali, South Africa, Bosnia, Canada, France, Japan, and more performing their work that largely centers around topics of identity, freedom, cultural celebration, and home. To witness their performance is to observe a refreshing spin on the art form of rhythmic performance poetry — Bailey’s smooth effortless delivery marrying seamlessly with Cages fiery and often explosive style. They are both recipients of Regional Emmy Awards and Ivey Awards, were named Power Couple of the Year by MSP Magazine and hold several career fellowships. They are proud parents of two lively boys who enjoy basketball drawing and dancing.
