June 27, 2012, Wednesday - Poet Katrina Vandenberg at Milkweed Editions

Time: 7:00pm

Location:  Milkweek Editions, 1011 Washington Avenue South, Open Book Building, Suite 300

The Alphabet Not Unlike the World
BY Katrina Vandenberg

In her highly ambitious second collection of poems, Katrina Vandenberg writes from the intersection of power and forgiveness. With poems named for letters of the Phoenician alphabet, and employing such innovative forms as the ancient ghazal, Vandenberg deciphers the seemingly indecipherable in this emotionally poignant collection. Moving between the physical and the abstract, the individual and the collective, The Alphabet Not Unlike the World unearths meaning—with astonishing beauty—from the pain of loss and separation.

Breakfast with a Preservationist: Updating the Saint Anthony Falls Historic District Design Guidelines – Brian Schaffer, Minneapolis CPED

The City of Minneapolis is currently updating the Saint Anthony Falls Historic District Design Guidelines, which were adopted by the Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission in 1980. In the three decades since the existing design guidelines were created, the district has seen dramatic change. Access to and interaction with the falls and the river has evolved, infrastructure has been added, project plans have been developed and realized, and the understanding and knowledge of the historic resources in the district have increased. The update to the design guidelines takes a holistic approach toward the many features that make up the essential character of the district. Brian Schaffer, the project manager for the new design guidelines, will review and discuss highlights of the proposed guidelines.

The most recent public draft of the design guidelines can be found on the project website.

This event is free.

June 26, 2012, Tuesday - Public Meeting on Planned Transit Service Changes Along Central Corridor at Central Library

Time: 11:00am - 1:00pm

Location: Doty Room at Central Library, 300 Nicollet Mall

Public Meeting on Planned Transit Service Changes Along Central Corridor

The Metropolitan Council will hold public meetings in June to receive comments on the concept plan for the Central Corridor Transit Service Study.

The plan will modify existing bus service to maximize connections with new Central Corridor (Green Line) light-rail service, which will begin operations in 2014. The Green Line will cover 11 miles, serve 18 stations and connect downtown Minneapolis – and the existing Hiawatha (Blue) Line – with the University of Minnesota, Midway commercial district, State Capitol complex, downtown St. Paul and neighborhoods in between.

The Central Corridor Transit Service Study helps ensure that transit service meets needs now and in the future. The study area is bounded by I-35E on the east; the Mississippi River on the south; downtown Minneapolis, Hiawatha Avenue and Lake Street on the west; and Larpenteur and East Hennepin Avenue on the north.

Affected bus routes in the study area include:
2, 3, 6, 8, 16, 21, 50, 53, 62, 63, 65, 67, 84, 87, 94, 134, 144, 262, 353, 355, 365, 375 and 452

The full concept plan can be found online.

All interested persons are encouraged to attend and offer comments. To register in advance to speak, call the Council at 651-602-1140.

The Council will provide reasonable accommodations to persons with disabilities.

Those who cannot attend a public meeting can comment as follows:
