From Jennie to Ribsy to Rocket: What the Dogs Have Taught Us

Animals may not be allowed in the University of Minnesota’s archives, but that doesn’t mean the University’s collections aren’t filled with them! From farm animals to beloved pets to mythical beasts, the Archives and Special Collections are teeming with creatures of all kinds. Join them for the 2019–2020 First Fridays season as the library explores the wild side of history. Canine characters take center stage as they examine the works of significant children's book artists and writers. Presented by Lisa Von Drasek (Curator, Children’s Literature Research Collection). 

After the talk, guests can spend time with licensed therapy animals from the Pet Away Worry & Stress (PAWS) program, run by Boynton Health Service at the University of Minnesota.

Free and open to the public.

Mimic examines the history and craft of marbling, from book arts origins to present day sculpture, fine art, and other decorative objects.

The exhibition includes local and international artists Sue Bjerke, Maisie Broome, Antonio Velez Celemin, Heather RJ Fletcher, Karli Frigge, Mary Holland, Dan and Regina St. John, Jemma Lewis, Diane Maurer-Mathison, Iris Nevins, Sheryl Oppenheim, Sally Power, Jana Pullman, Christin Ripley, Barb Skoog, Natalie Stopka, Sevim Surucu, and Robert Wu.

Visiting masters of marbling Regina and Dan St. John of Chena River Marblers will give an artist talk at the Mimic closing reception on October 3. Based in Massachusetts, Regina and Dan specialize in book edge-marbling, miniature marbling, custom marbled papers, and teaching marbling workshops around the country.

Dating back to the 12th century in Japan and 15th century in Turkey, the art of marbling involves floating paint on water mixed viscous with carrageenan, a seaweed extract; creating intricate patterns and designs using unusual, handmade tools; and then laying paper, fabric, wood, or other porous materials onto the surface of the bath, where the image is immediately and permanently transferred to the desired surface.

Don't be afraid of the dark, be afraid of what's in it.

Tour the main mansion, servants' quarters, and basements. Learn the history of Clifton Avenue and possibly meet the ghost of one of the Carpenter family's chambermaids, Gertrude. The tour this year will start at our sister property "Oaklands on 9th," the city's first apartment building. The Oaklands is currently undergoing massive preservation work after a nine-hour fire and three years with no roof left the building in unimaginable disrepair. What a place to peek around while we wait for our chauffeur to take us up the hill to Historic 300 Clifton!

300 Clifton is an authentic Historic Home which hearkens to a time when horse-drawn carriages clip-clopped through downtown, and Clifton was lined with similarly appointed residences that reflected the grace and style of wealthy urban families in the late 19th century. Once at the grand mansion, the tour explores the main mansion, grounds, and carriage house, all in the most uncomfortable way possible: in the dark! Only on the Candlelight Tour do you get all of the incredible history of 300 Clifton and the ghost stories too! On the tour, you get to pass through secret passages into the creepy parts of the house and hear the stories of the ghosts of 300 Clifton, and maybe even experience contact with the other side! You will tour the formal areas of the house and then travel to the basement and subbasement where the paranormal investigators found the haunted souls to be the most active!

Our tours run once weekly.

The event will start at 215 S. 9th Street (not 300 Clifton Avenue). Guests will complete registration and enjoy a meet and greet with other attendees and tour guides. A shuttle will take the group from the Oaklands on 9th to 300 Clifton Avenue. After the tour, shuttle services will take attendees back to the Oaklands on 9th at approximately 10 pm.

PARKING: Parking is available in surrounding lots and ramps, no parking on the property.

We are bringing the crafting outside of the Socially Handcrafted workshop this fall! Join us at Number 12 Cider in Minneapolis, get your craft on and enjoy your favorite local cider!

At this workshop you will learn to "table knit" your own chunky throw blanket. There are no knitting needles involved, but it will be an active class and requires standing and moving for a majority of the class time. You will knit a blanket that measures approximately 40" x 60" (exact sizing varies depending on the individual knitting). No matter what your skill level, anyone can complete this large cozy blanket!

We offer a variety of neutral yarn colors -- including off white, gray and taupe along with a few other rotating color choices. You will select your yarn color at the event -- colors are distributed on a first come, first serve basis but you are guaranteed the choice of a neutral yarn.
