Fee: $14 adults, $12 seniors and college students, $10 children ages 6-17 and MHS members. Tour includes museum admission.

Also covered will be how the mill ruin was converted to a museum and office building.

The plant is at 1180 Main Street SE, at the east head of the Dinkytown Bikeway Bride (Bridge No. 9). November 15, 2012, Thursday - Society of Professional Journalists: Dramatic Details—Without Dramatic License at The Loft

Tme: 7:00pm

Location: The Loft, Performance Hall, 1011 Washington Avenue South

Society of Professional Journalists: Dramatic Details—Without Dramatic License

The Society of Professional Journalists and the Loft cosponsor an event exploring the choices writers make when writing the “truth.”

"The tools of the theater are not the same as the tools of journalism." Those were the words performer Mike Daisey used last winter to defend his now infamous monologue about Apple's supply chain in China. The story was full of vivid details about Daisey's undercover observations at the factory complex and his emotional conversations with its workers—many of which turned out to be made up. After the piece aired on This American Life, Daisey admitted to taking "dramatic license" in order to tell a more compelling story. At this event, we will interview four Twin Cities journalists about how they incorporate dramatic details into their stories—without the dramatic license. How can writers hone their eyes and ears to recognize details that bring true stories to life. Panelists include Sasha Aslanian of Minnesota Public Radio, David Hanners of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Boyd Huppert of KARE 11, and Steve Marsh of Mpls St. Paul and Delta Sky magazines.

Sasha Aslanian got her start as a daily news producer in the MPR newsroom in 1992. From 2000 to 2008, she produced documentaries for American RadioWorks, the national documentary unit of American Public Media. She is the creator of MPR News' Youth Radio Series. Aslanian has won awards named for famous news men: Edward R. Murrow, Lowell Thomas, Heywood Broun, and Eric Sevareid. She is a graduate of Grinnell College.

David Hanners has been a reporter for the Saint Paul Pioneer Press since 1994.  His awards include the 1989 Pulitzer Prize in Journalism for explanatory journalism, the 1990 George Polk Award for regional reporting, he has been honored with first place awards from the Minnesota Associated Press Association, the State Bar of Texas, the Austin Headliners Club, the Press Club of Dallas, the Texas Farmers' Union, the Aviation/Space Writers' Association and the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors. Hanners is a graduate of Indiana State University in Terre Haute.

Boyd Huppert got his start in broadcasting as a 16-year-old announcer at his hometown radio station, WEVR in River Falls, Wisconsin. He majored in Journalism and Political Science at UW-River Falls and began his television career in 1984 at WSAW-TV in Wausau. Boyd worked at two more TV stations, KETV in Omaha and WITI in Milwaukee, before joining KARE 11 in 1996. In 2012, Boyd was honored with the national Edward R. Murrow Award for writing, his eighth national Murrow Award. He's also the recipient of the 2011 national Sigma Delta Chi Award for feature reporting—his third. In 2007 Boyd was awarded a national Emmy for feature reporting.

Steve Marsh has written for Wall Street Journal, GQ, Grantland, and Vulture.  He is senior writer at Mpls.St.Paul Magazine and Delta Sky.  He’s interviewed everyone from Jay-Z to Uggie the terrier from The Artist. He’s written stories on dead dolphins and dead poets (John Berryman) and Vicodin dealers on the Internet. Minnpost's David Brauer calls him "the most nimbly aggressive local writer since David Carr."

THIS EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

November 15, 2012, Thursday - Romeo and Juliet at The Southern Theater (3 Nights)

Show Dates and Times:
Nov 15-16-17-18
8:00pm Thur, Fri, Sat; and 5:00p Sun

Location: The Southern Theater, 1420 Washington Avenue South

Theatre Coup d’Etat invites you to experience the timeless tale of William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, this time told with a twist. Romeo & Juliet has been heralded as “one of the greatest love stories ever told.” We have read it in our high school English classes, watched it unfold on countless stages, and we have seen it reshaped and splashed on to movie screens across the world. It is a timeless piece of work with a timeless message; that true love is a simple, yet pure and powerful part of life and no single individual should be persecuted in their effort to pursue it.

Due to the upcoming vote on the marriage amendment, and in an effort to uphold their mission “to provoke an emotional and analytical response in [their] audiences by showing the depth of the human condition through both classical and contemporary works,” and to support Minnesotans United for All Families “Pledge to Vote No,” campaign, Theatre Coup d’Etat will be presenting William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet with Romeo played by a woman, as a woman. Theatre Coup d’Etat aims to serve the Minnesota community it works in and the challenges it faces.

Theatre Coup d’Etat has established itself by using a raw, gritty and minimalist approach to some of the most renowned pieces of theatre. The company was formed in 2011 by James Napoleon Stone and Peter Beard on the idea that theatre should be used as a social tool to provoke, not to sedate. Recently credited with an “aggressive” and “divine” (TC Planet) Angels in America: Millennium Approaches, Theatre Coup d’Etat has also presented an “impressively conceptualized and beautifully performed” production (Goldstar Audience Review) of A Streetcar Named Desire, and a “ferocious” (TC Planet) Macbeth. The production of Romeo & Juliet will be no different in its effort to spark a response from its audience.

Time: 5:30pm

Location: Aster Cafe, 125 SE Main Street

A SIP OF SCIENCE - Hawai'i to Hurricane Sandy: Can Ecosystem Management Affect Water Resources?

Our everyday landscape is constantly evolving and changing.  Whether wetlands are converted into productive agricultural fields; prairies, forests and deserts urbanized for towns and cities; or rivers channelized to minimize land loss, the way we design our landscape impacts our water resources and the ecosystem benefits we derive from the environment. With constant pressure for land conversion, we need to develop a better understanding of the impacts of land use on our water and ecosystem resources so it can better inform public decision-making.

Join Institute on the Environment researcher Kate Brauman as she explores quantifying the impacts of land-use change on the municipal water supply in Kona, Hawaii, and how that process can be translated to various environments throughout the world.

About our speaker:

Kate Brauman is a post-doctoral research at the University of Minnesota's Institute on the Environment.  Her work currently includes looking for patterns in agricultural water use to identify regions where changing irrigation management could increase or stabilize food supply while ensuring the delivery of a suite of complementary ecosystem services.  She received her PhD from Stanford University's Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources.  Prior to graduate school, Kate worked in Public Education at the Natural Resources Defense Council, providing information to and interpreting scientific findings for members.

A SIP OF SCIENCE bridges the gap between science and culture in a setting that bridges the gap between brain and belly. Food, beer, and learning are on the menu in a happy hour forum in which researchers pair with musicians, artists and storytellers to put science in context through storytelling.
