We find ourselves in a unique time:
Our older LGBT generation, grew up and lived most their lives under complete oppression. The younger generation, now coming into the world, will grow up under the most freedom we've ever had. The rest of us fall somewhere in between. We all still carry the emotional scars of oppression. Though these scars vary for each generation. These scars define us as a community, not our Community Sages. We've lost our Sages because of the A.I.D.S. epidemic, and the closet. We are just now discovering them. And they're found as they've always been found; through our stories. Now is the time to share our stories.

February 5, 2014, Wednesday - Mark Wunderlich Publication Launch at The Loft

Time: 7:00pm

Location: The Loft, Performance Hall, 1011 Washington Avenue South

Mark Wunderlich Publication Launch

Graywolf Press poet Mark Wunderlich will read from his latest collection, The Earth Avails. The collection is a book of gratitude and a moving elegy for a way of life that now feels so absent from contemporary existence. Taking its title from an Anglo-Saxon bee charm, this book comes out of the deep tradition of writing down a poem, a letter, or a spell to mark particular occasions, or to magically protect someone from disease or harm, or to praise God for the bounties of the natural world. Rendered in part from folkloric and historical sources, Mark Wunderlich’s poems reinvent these traditions with lyrical and emotive force for a new century of readers.

Mark Wunderlich is the author of two previous poetry collections, Voluntary Servitude and The Anchorage, winner of the Lambda Literary Award. He teaches at Bennington College and is a member of the core faculty of the Bennington Writing Seminars. He lives in New York’s Hudson Valley.

January 28, 2014, Tuesday - City of Minneapolis Public Meeting at City Hall

Time: 4:30pm

Location: City Hall, Room 319, 350 South 5th Street

City of Minneapolis Public Meeting Scheduled for January 28

The City of Minneapolis is hosting a public meeting to discuss the proposed Conservation District Ordinance, on Tuesday, January 28, 2014, at 4:30 p.m., at City Hall in Room 319. This ordinance is designed to ensure development in notable areas respects neighborhood character.

Developed using public input, the ordinance conserves notable visual character in a manner that offers more protections than the zoning code, but fewer protections than historic district design guidelines.

Under this proposed ordinance, two-thirds of property owners in a contiguous area with notable visual character would have the opportunity to request conservation district status. If passed, the proposed ordinance would amend the City's existing Heritage Preservation Regulations.

Comments on the draft of this ordinance will be accepted in person during the public meeting or by emailing City staff member John Smoley at john.smoley@minneapolismn.gov through 4:30p.m., on February 4.

Following the gathering of public input, the ordinance will be revised and prepared for review by the State Historic Preservation Office, the Heritage Preservation Commission, and the City Council. For updated project information, please visit the Heritage Preservation Commission Web site.
