June 20, 2014, Friday - Mentor Series: Christopher Castellani at The Loft

Time: 7:00pm

Location: The Loft at Open Book (Performance Hall), 1011 Washington Ave S

Mentor Series: Christopher Castellani

The 2013-2014 Loft Mentor Series in Poetry and Creative Prose presents fiction mentor Christopher Castellani reading along with program participants Cole Perry (fiction) and Isadora Gruye (poetry).

Christopher Castellani is the son of Italian immigrants and a native of Wilmington, Delaware. He resides in Boston, where he is the artistic director of Grub Street, one of the country’s leading non-profit creative writing centers. He is the author of three novels: A Kiss from Magdalena, winner of the Massachusetts Book Award in 2004; The Saint of Lost Things, a BookSense (IndieBound) Notable Book; and All This Talk of Love published in February 2013. In addition to Grub Street, Christopher is on the faculty of the Warren Wilson MFA program and the Bread Loaf Writers Conference.

Isadora Gruye is a writer and photographer living in Saint Paul, Minnesota. She gets less than 4 hours of sleep each night, except for weekends when she sleeps until her muscles ache from atrophy. Things that few people know about Isadora: she plays chess but is not very good at strategy. She believes in cartography and beekeepers but has little need for maps or honey. In her writing, Isadora goes for a gut reaction. She wants no reign over your brain or your heart, there are too many competing, fleeting factions there. Her poems are the girl at the bar who can hold an intellectual conversation while drinking your whiskey, then sucker punch you when the brawl starts. Her work has previously appeared at Katherine Press.

Cole Perry was raised in Bovey, MN, and spent nearly a decade in South and Central America, before returning to northern Minnesota. His writing has received awards from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council, the Minnesota State Arts Board, and Jerome Foundation. He is currently at work on a novel.

June 20, 2014, Friday - Opening Reception for Americana at The Soap Factory

Time: 7:00pm - 11:00pm

Location: The Soap Factory, 514 2nd St SE

The Soap Factory presents Americana, a group exhibition featuring the work of 9 emerging artists from across North America. Selected from The Soap Factory’s annual open call for submissions by curator and Executive Director Ben Heywood, Americana features drawing, sculpture, video and installation work.

Participating artists: Shana Berger & Nathan Purath, Patrick Gantert, Leif Huron, Steven Lang, Ellen Mueller, Mark Pease, Kenneth Steinbach, Tetsuya Yamada

All the work proposed for this show approaches ways of understanding 'America' and the 'American Experience' - perhaps even my own personal experience as an immigrant - through work that directly examines the political aspects of various forms of American society, work that mirrors the transformation of culture through the lens of 'America', or more open poetic re-orgnisations of 'American' tropes. The Soap Factory itself, a 130 year old relic of the conquest, subjugation and industrialization of a continent, is an artifact of the nostalgia, evoked by ‘Americana’, so it is entirely appropriate that its decayed architecture be a setting, a container, for such ideas.

June 17, 2014, Tuesday - Emily Johnson's SHORE at The Loft

Time: 7:00pm

Location: The Loft at Open Book (Performance Hall), 1011 Washington Ave S

Emily Johnson's SHORE

SHORE is Emily Johnson/Catalyst’s new dance work, the third in a trilogy of works that began with The Thank-you Bar and continued with Niicugni. SHORE is a multi-day performance installation of dance, story, volunteerism, and feasting. It is a celebration of the places where we meet and merge—land and water, performer and audience, art and community, past, present, and future.

Over the course of a week, SHORE will be presented in four equal parts: COMMUNITY ACTIONS (volunteerism) in partnership with local community organizations; STORY, a curated reading by local authors; a PERFORMANCE that begins outdoors and moves into the theater at Northrop, and a festive culminating potluck FEAST to which participants also bring the stories and recipes of the dishes they bring to share.

SHORE: STORY (curated reading)
Tuesday June 17, 7 p.m.

In partnership with The Loft Literary Center and Emily Johnson/Catalyst.

Featuring works by authors Jayal Chung, Paula Cisewski, Heid Erdrich, Brett Elizabeth Jenkins, R. Vincent Moniz, Jr., Marcie Rendon, Ben Weaver, and Dwayne Williams. Curated by Emily Johnson.

Local writers, their perspectives, stories, and poems have a prominent place within SHORE in this curated reading featuring original work relating to home, place, and land. Infinite associations, connections, and disconnections people have with, to, and from these sites are conjured in the moment of the reading and create a shifting, localized context for our stories, memories, and own definitions of home.

Free, registration requested:

Time: 10:00am

East Hennepin: Behind the Scenes

The bustling commercial district surrounding East Hennepin Avenue has hosted many names throughout the years, but everyone knows its unforgettable landmarks . . . Surdyk’s, Nye’s, Kramarczuk’s, Historic Main Street, and Our Lady of Lourdes Church.

Located across the Hennepin Bridge from Downtown, this neighborhood was originally established in 1855 as the Town of St. Anthony Falls and later merged with The City of Minneapolis in 1872. Its proximity to the Mississippi River, Downtown, the University, and Northeast Minneapolis have made it an influential hub for transit, industry, and commerce. The last decade has brought dramatic change and the area around East Hennepin is now considered one of the trendiest and most exciting places in Minneapolis to eat, shop, and live. Fortunately, the area has managed to maintain its old-world flavor to this day.

Join us for a “behind-the-scenes” history of the busy streets, unique businesses, and colorful people that have shaped this popular walking neighborhood.   Hear amazing stories told from the perspective of individuals who have lived and worked here, through good times and bad. Come away with perspective on what life and work here might have actually felt like throughout this neighborhood’s most defining eras.

This tour will walk approximately 10-12 city blocks. The tour guides are Scott Parkin and Michael Rainville.
