Birds of the River Paddle with Wilderness Inquiry

National Park Service Ranger and bird expert Sharon Stiteler will be the lead interpreter on this paddle. (Check out her bird blog - www.birdchick.com!) This trip will take you from North Mississippi Regional Park to Boom Island. See a heron rookery in action, osprey nests, and experience true urban birding in the heart of downtown Minneapolis!

Day trips are an introductory half-day canoe experience on the Mighty Mississippi River. They're a great way for you and your family to experience our community and its wild places from a whole new vantage point. Fee: $45

Day trips are a great way to experience the great outdoors right in your own backyard. We'll provide voyageur canoes, staff, all equipment and shuttles. These trips involve and engage everyone regardless of their age, ability, or previous outdoor experience.

Parking is available at North Mississippi Regional Park near the playground and picnic area. A free shuttle will be provided at the end. You should be back to your cars around 1 p.m.

Hungry for an off-the-beaten path Minneapolis food experience? Join us as we explore one of the city's trendy and historical neighborhoods, Mill District and St. Anthony on Main in Northeast Minneapolis. You'll enjoy the afternoon sampling food at the first Thai restaurant in Minnesota, drinking local Minnesota brewed craft beer at the oldest restaurant in Minneapolis, and enjoy a local favorite - the cheese curds.  You'll also enjoy mouth-watering pasta located in the historical Chase building, home-made gelato, and nosh on savory European style baked bread as we stroll through the local Farmers Market.

Along with sampling food we will also visit the Mill City Museum, stroll by the Guthrie, and enjoy gorgeous views of St. Anthony Falls as we walk along the Stone Arch Bridge into historical St. Anthony on Main.  You'll learn about the history of both these neighborhoods including a stroll along the oldest street in Minneapolis.  You'll taste and chat with other food-loving guests, and leave the tour with an appreciation for these distinct neighborhoods that most tourist never see!

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will welcome visitors to Lock and Dam #1 for an open house. Free and open to the public.

•Located on Mississippi River mile 847.9, in Minneapolis.
•Construction completed in 1917, reconstructed in 1929. Main Lock completed May 1932. Last major rehabilitation 1978-1983.
•Dam consists of Ambursen concrete overflow structure 574' long, hydro power station owned and operated by Brookfield Power Co.
•Lock is 56' wide by 400' long. River Lock 56' wide by 400' long.
•It is the only twin lock in the district.

Bike With a Ranger - St. Anthony Falls

National park ranger led bike ride with stops along the way to learn about our national park on the Mississippi River.

Distance: 1.25 miles

Join the ranger for an informal tour of the falls area to see some of the features that made Minneapolis an economic force. This is a very short ride that crosses the Stone Arch Bridge or meanders upstream to the 'first bridge," your choice. Participants can rent a bike from the Nice Ride station. Most tours will be complete in about thirty minutes. Ride is a casual pace appropriate for riders of most abilities.

SPACE IS LIMITED to the first 20 people, please arrive 15 minutes early.

July 17, 2015, Friday - Mill City Summer Opera Presents The Daughter of the Regiment at Mill City Museum

Mill City Summer Opera (MCSO) is excited to present Gaetano Donizetti’s brilliant comedy The Daughter of the Regiment, directed by David Lefkowich, July 11-21, 2015.

Future performances: July 19 and 21, 8:00pm. Mill City Museum’s dramatic Ruin Courtyard will again be the venue for all performances.

This two act opera centers on Marie, the “daughter” of a regiment of soldiers who adopted her when she was a young girl and raised her as one of their own. Marie meets a local boy, Tonio, who joins the regiment in order to marry her. They soon fall in love. But the Marquise of Birkenfeld declares she is Marie’s aunt, and that Marie must leave the regiment to become a proper lady. Ultimately true love wins and Marie and Tonio are allowed to marry. The first act is set in the mountains of Tyrol, and the second takes place within the chateau of the Marquise de Birkenfeld.

Set to a French libretto by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges and Jean-François Bayard, this opera is known for its lighthearted, catchy music that captures the story’s humor with its playful yet challenging vocals. The opera’s dialogue that will be in English and all music and arias are in French. Supertitles will translate the French into English.

The North Loop Warehouse District was the city’s warehouse and wholesaling hub during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a time when Minneapolis was a major distribution center for the upper Midwest. The area has retained its sense of time and place, with original bridges, brick-paved streets, and trains that still rattle through daily on the old track beds. The tour will explore the overall history of the district  and individual buildings and the architects who designed them.

This tour will walk less than one mile and will be guided by Rolf Anderson.
