Can words really change the world? We often say that actions speak louder than words. If we believe that's true, maybe words can't do all that much to make the world a better place. Maybe only action leads to change. But don't we also often say that words matter? That they're something uniquely human, and at their best, aren't they also powerful actions in themselves? Aren't words, poems and stories capable of effecting change in a family, community, country or world? In the Loft's first Big Ideas conversation they're going to get to the heart of hearts and minds. They'll explore how and when words provoke someone to act, change their mind or find common understanding. Join them for a conversation with writers and community leaders who use language and storytelling to build bridges of understanding and effect change in the world. Sun Yung Shin will facilitate the conversation, joined by Alexs D. Pate and Tea Rozman Clark. Regular admission: $10.00; members: $5.00.

Copresented by Into Quarterly and the Loft, this event will feature readings from select artist contributors and a brief panel discussion about how a sense of place influences home, community, and social action/reaction through words and visual art.
Featured readers include Kao Kalia Yang, Kathryn Haddad, and Matt Rasmussen.
Panelists include: Hieu Minh Nguyen, Michael Cina, Jovan C. Speller, Dyani White Hawk, and Shannon Gibney
Inspired by local themes such as social justice, identity, cold, and kindness, Into: Minneapolis features work by 40 artists who are currently defining Minneapolis’ creative tone, including Dyani White Hawk, Michael Cina, Bobby Rogers, Wing Ta, Danez Smith, Matt Rasmussen, Sarah Stonich, Shelly Mosman, Meg Lewis, Hieu Minh Nguyen, Ed Bok Lee, Sun Yung Shin, Eliesa Johnson, Kate Worum, Eight Hour Day, Bao Phi, Kao Kalia Yang, and many more. “Heyday: 35 Years of Music in Minneapolis” Exhibit Opening
A free public reception will open a new photography exhibit “Heyday: 35 years of Music in Minneapolis," a companion to the new book from Minnesota Historical Society Press featuring photography by Daniel Corrigan and text by Danny Sigelman. Corrigan has been photographing the Minneapolis music scene since 1981—just as the scene was coming to life. As both a freelancer and the official house photographer for the legendary club First Avenue, he has captured thousands of live concerts, shot countless band promo photos and was behind the camera for many of the best-known and most beloved album covers by local artists. The exhibit includes framed photographs and a slideshow with many unpublished Corrigan photos.
Remarks at 7:00 hosted by Andrea Swensson from 89.3 The Current.
A cash bar will be available, and Corrigan and Sigelman will be available to sign copies of the book.
The exhibit will be located in the museum’s central Mill Commons and is free and open to the public during regular museum hours through April 30, 2017.
