December 3, 2017, Sunday - Sonomento presents Dido and Aeneas at MacPhail

Time: 7 pm

Location: MacPhail Center for Music, Antonello Hall, 501 Second Street S

Sonomento presents Dido and Aeneas

Sonomento, under the direction of Craig Fields, opens its tenth season with an encore presentation of the 2008 concert performance of Dido and Aeneas, which some call “the greatest opera ever written in the English language.” This stirring English baroque opera was presented in 2008 to launch MacPhail’s Spotlight Series. It will be presented with outstanding professional string players from the Minneapolis area and the forty voices of Sonomento. They will be joined by a strong cast of professional soloists, featuring soprano Riley Svatos in the title role, soprano Naomi Karstad as Belinda, mezzo-soprano Sally Clayburn as the Sorceress and baritone Erik Krohg as Aeneas, in an intensely stirring performance with baroque orchestra. This is music that will lift your spirit and stir your soul!
.
The brilliant, 30-year-old composer Henry Purcell, considered to be the greatest English composer of any era, completed this dramatic piece in 1689. It is considered the first opera written in English and was premiered at the Chelsea School for Girls in London. Based on the Fourth Book of the Aeneid, it tells of the tragic and touching love affair between Aeneas, hero of the Trojan wars and the beautiful Dido, the virgin queen of Carthage, who dies of a broken heart.
.
This season’s concerts are all fundraisers for our 2018 Tour of the British Isles and appearance at the famous Eisteddfod Music Festival in Wales. Donations are much appreciated.

The 2nd Annual Winterfest on Second Street is Saturday, December 2, from 11:00am - 1:00pm. Winterfest is sponsored by the Friends of the Mill District, a small, neighborhood charity with a mission to build community in the Mill District. This event takes place in conjunction with the Mill City Farmers Market (held inside the Mill City Museum) and is a gathering of neighbors with horse and carriage rides, hot chocolate, sledding (in Gold Medal Park, dependent on snow cover) and caroling. The caroling is organized and led by the Mill City Singers, and we invite anyone interested to join us. We will have lyric sheets and stroll 2nd Street S, singing songs of the season.

Please consider supporting our neighbors in need by dropping off donations at Cynthia Froid Group, located at 702 2nd Street S, across from the Mill City Museum. People Serving People is always in need of diapers, outerwear, and other things. YouthLink needs hats, mittens, and many other items. Donations of money and/or gift cards can also be dropped off.

If you love to sing, join the Mill City Singers for caroling during Winterfest. We will begin at the Guthrie, stopping to sing at various locations along 2nd Street. Come sing with us - all are welcome! You don’t have to be a member of the Singers to participate.

December 1, 2017, Friday - The Film Society of Minneapolis St. Paul presents "Bill Nye The Science Guy" (thru Dec 7)

Minneapolis St. Paul Film Society presents "Bill Nye The Science Guy"

December 1 - 7

Showing at St. Anthony Main Theatre, 115 SE Main Street

Bill Nye is a man on a mission: to stop the spread of anti-scientific thinking across the world. The former star of the popular kids show "Bill Nye The Science Guy" is now the CEO of The Planetary Society, an organization founded by Bill's mentor Carl Sagan, where he's launching a solar propelled spacecraft into the cosmos and advocating for the importance of science, research, and discovery in public life. With intimate and exclusive access--as well as plenty of wonder and whimsy--this behind-the-scenes portrait of Nye follows him as he takes off his Science Guy lab coat and takes on those who deny climate change, evolution, and a science-based world view. The film features Bill Nye, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Ann Druyan, and many others.
