June 11, 2018, Monday - Preservation of Fire-Damaged Platteville Limestone Presentation at Mill City Museum

Time: 1 – 3 pm

Location: Mill City Museum, 704 Second Street S

Preservation of Fire-Damaged Platteville Limestone

The AIA of Minnesota welcomes you to join them on June 11 when Angela Wolf Scott from MacDonald and Mack Architects will present the current preservation work at the Mill City Museum that focuses on the technical aspects of analysis and treatment of fire-damaged limestone ruins.

The Washburn Crosby A Mill Complex is a National Historic Landmark on the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis. It was the epicenter of flour milling and innovation from the late part of the nineteenth century until 1965 when the site was no longer used for milling. The site suffered from multiple fires, but the February 1991 fire left the A Mill in a fragile state of ruins. In 1999 the site was redeveloped into commercial office space and the Mill City Museum. The most iconic part of the redevelopment is the Ruins Courtyard – a space that had been the northern half of the A Mill which is currently open-air and bound on three sides by the Platteville limestone ruins of the A Mill.

To improve their stewardship of the Washburn Crosby A Mill Complex, MNHS commissioned a Historic Structure Report on the complex with a key concern being a study of the ruins. Pieces of stone and mortar were routinely falling into the much-loved courtyard. The HSR included analyses of the characteristics of Platteville limestone in general but focused on the specific characteristics of the Platteville limestone of the ruins which had been exposed to fire; dramatic, thermal shifts; exposure to the elements; and modern, restoration products.

Armed with a more precise understanding of the physical properties of the stone and ruin walls, MNHS invested in the preservation of the ruins, approaching the work in phases. The physical preservation work uncovered and confirmed the academic research and analysis, making each subsequent phase more informed than the last.

June 7, 2018, Thursday - Iron and Water: My Life Protecting Minnesota's Environment book launch at Open Book

Time:  6:00pm

Location: Open Book, 1011 S Washington Avenue

Author Grant J. Merritt will discuss and sign copies of his new memoir Iron and Water: My Life Protecting Minnesota's EnvironmentQ&A with Grant J. Merritt led by Byron Starns. Merritt was an attorney in the areas of environmental law, transportation, and governmental relations for more than fifty years. Starns is a litigation attorney and partner at Stinson, Leonard and Street. He represented Merritt, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, and the State of Minnesota in the Reserve Mining Case.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
In 1855 the Merritt family arrived in Minnesota, where a descendant, Alfred, would one day become one of the “Seven Iron Men”—builders of the first mines to tap the state’s great mineral wealth in the Mesabi Range. Another Merritt, more than half a century later, would lead the efforts to protect Lake Superior from damage caused by mining. Iron and Water is Grant J. Merritt’s memoir of his life’s work on behalf of Minnesota’s people and environment and also the story of a significant family in state history.

Merritt’s family played a key role in the struggle over natural resources in Minnesota—for the enrichment of mining pioneers, the prosperity of the state and its people, and the prospect of a secure and healthy future. This complex tale begins with the adventure of discovering iron ore and building the mines, railroads, and docks to move it, then devolves into the intrigues of business partnerships gone bad and attempts by John D. Rockefeller to defraud the Merritts. What follows is an engrossing account of Grant Merritt’s years in the halls of state politics and the trenches of environmental activism in defense of Minnesota’s North Shore and Lake Superior’s waters. The author’s tenure as head of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency under Governor Wendell Anderson and his service on the first board of the Minnesota Environmental Quality Council take us behind the scenes of landmark legal cases and crucial moments in Minnesota history—particularly the notable Reserve Mining case, in which the company was found liable for serious environmental and health threats on the shores of Lake Superior and ordered to be shut down.

In these pages we encounter the people who were critical to this history, from robber baron Rockefeller to judges, activists, and politicians, including Walter Mondale and Jim Oberstar. In chronicling both the discovery of vast iron deposits on the Mesabi Range and the fight to save Lake Superior and Minnesota’s natural riches, Iron and Water reveals how, whether alone or together, individuals wield the power to change the world.
