August 3, 2018, Friday - MEDUSA at Logan Park

Time: 830pm nightly (August 3, 4, 5 and August 10, 11, 12)

Location: Logan Park, 680 13th Avenue NE

MEDUSA storms the Fringe, more fiery than ever!

For this outdoor spectacle at sunset, audiences should bring blankets or collapsible chairs for seating if desired. Fringe Festival does not allow late seating, so plan to arrive early and stake out your best viewing spot. MEDUSA outdoor performance space is located at the south west end of Logan Park field, near the corner of Jefferson Street NE and Broadway Street NE. Ample parking and restrooms are easily accessible. Tickets: https://www.minnesotafringe.org

This fiercely provocative and visually stunning outdoor production, set amongst the night sky and circle of trees in Logan Park, is back by popular demand. The Twin Cities’ own, Vox Medusa multi-media dance company and Infiammati FireCircus, will present a not-to-be-missed encore of their critically acclaimed and sold-out production: MEDUSA. This year's Fringe production holds the same intoxicating music, virtuosic vocal and dance performances along with new poignant video environments and even more heart stopping fire battle choreography.

MEDUSA was previously presented to sold-out houses in the 2017 MN Fringe Festival, receiving rave reviews from both audiences and critics alike. Due to the nature of the story of this Greek mythological female powerhouse, MEDUSA was presented again in October 2017, as a tribute to National Domestic Violence Awareness month.

Medusa's full story is scarcely known beyond her vilified ending as a monster and destroyer of men. Vox Medusa dance company and Infiammati FireCircus join forces to honor the compelling myth of Medusa's transformation from Athena's loving and devoted priestess to demonized gorgon. Infiammati spins fire to bring to life Medusa's emotional state and the destruction of her innocence, while Vox Medusa unfolds her tale of sorrow and redemption. This poignant story is retold by passionate artists collaborating through contemporary dance, fire performance, a video projected set, and an original electronic music score accompanied by live vocalists.

MEDUSA is an incredibly cathartic story for anyone who has experienced physical and/or emotional abuse, sexual assault and become the target of society’s mind-twisting, “Blame the victim,” excuse to avoid this universal horror. Most people don't know the full origin of her story and wrote her off as a man hating/killing wretched creature. MEDUSA is a powerful experience. Although this story tugs at areas society would like to forget, it also beautifully portrays the strength it takes to reclaim the, “self,” all while being presented in a way that is a visual/audible feast and acceptable viewing for all ages.

August 1, 2018, Wednesday - Public Comment Meeting on Police Department Charter Change

Time: 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM

Location: Minneapolis City Council Chamber

Please come to this joint meeting of the Minneapolis City Council Intergovernmental Relations and Public Safety committee to share your thoughts and show your support for the Minneapolis Charter Amendment providing for the Mayor and City Council to have and exercise joint responsibility for the establishment, maintenance, and command the Police Department.

The Council is considering putting a Charter Amendment on the ballot that, If approved by the voters, would amend the Minneapolis Charter provision that puts the supervision of the police department solely in the mayor’s hands and instead make it a shared responsibility of both the Mayor and City Council. Unlike any other City department, according to the Charter, the mayor is “vested with all the powers of said city connected with and incident to the establishment, maintenance, appointment, removal, discipline, control and supervision of its police force…” It is this arrangement that has made it particularly difficult for Council Members, and through them community members, to fully engage and influence how we manage and assist our police officers. The Council cannot direct staff, set policy, or institute promising management practices when the Charter gives the Council no authority over the department, except to approve the appointment of the police chief and the department’s budget.

The language of the proposed change and proposed ballot question can be found at https://lims.minneapolismn.gov/File/2018-00802
