November 27, 2018, Tuesday - Hennepin County Budget (truth in taxation) Meeting

Time: 6 p.m.

Location: Hennepin County Government Center, County Board Room, 24th floor, 300 6th Street

Hennepin County will hold a public meeting on the proposed 2019 budget and property tax levy – commonly called the truth in taxation meeting – on November 27.

Free parking is available after 5 p.m for residents attending the meeting in the underground ramp at the Government Center. The ramp entrance is on 3rd Avenue between 5th and 6th streets.

Proposed budget and levy

The proposed 2019 budget is $2.4 billion. The proposed net property tax levy is $830 million, an increase of 5.25 percent from last year.

The Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority and Hennepin County Housing and Redevelopment Authority will also discuss their budgets and levies the meeting.

For more details, visit hennepin.us/hcbudget.

Property values

Property tax valuations affect the property tax portion of the budget. The Hennepin County Assessor's Office assesses properties and estimates the value they would likely sell for on the open market, which is one factor used in determining property taxes. Other factors include property tax levies set by the school districts, city, county or special taxing districts that the property is in.

November 26, 2018, Monday - Concert by Ukrainian folk musician Jurij Fedynskyj

Time: 6:00pm

Location: Ukrainian Event Center, 301 Main Street NE

Concert by Ukrainian folk musician Jurij Fedynskyj

Come to this free event to learn about ancient Ukrainian instruments torban, kobza, and bandura and to hear them during the performance by Jurij Fedynskyj - Player, Maker, Teacher!

For the past fifteen years, Jurij Fedynskyj has worked to resurrect these original and unique, Ukrainian instruments, by researching their construction from a handful of surviving instruments in Ukrainian museums, and mastering the techniques required to make and play new instruments. He is one of several makers who create exclusive and professional examples of these instruments presently, and the only player who regularly performs traditional repertoire on all three. He teaches making and playing in a small Ukrainian village in the Poltava region.

Yurij will:
- present the traditional Ukrainian torban, kobza and bandura;
- give a lecture on the history and development of these once beloved national instruments; and
- demonstrate the traditional repertoire performed on the torban, kobza, and bandura.

Cookies, tea, and coffee will be served.

November 24, 2018, Saturday - Tellabration! at Open Book

Tellabration!, an annual event promoted by The National Storytelling Network and hosted in over 300 venues around the world, will be celebrated in downtown Minneapolis on Saturday, November 24, 10am – 9:30pm at Open Book, 1011 Washington Avenue S.

The day-long event, which is free to all, features a dozen panel discussions, classes, and workshops that explore a wide-range of topics about storytelling, narrative techniques in other disciplines (e.g. film, podcasts, poetry), and how to craft, promote, and refine stories for audiences and print. Topics include: Storycrafting, Creating and Hosting a Spoken Word Series (with five veteran hosts), Growing a Social Media Presence, and Smart Micro-Publishing That Makes the Effort Worth It.

There will also be a literature/merchandise table, games and stories to which guests can contribute, and, most importantly, a hosted open mike from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. where all visitors are invited to tell a story, or a story about a story.

The event will conclude with an evening concert in the Target Performance Hall featuring the donated talents of Kevin Kling, Tom Cassidy, Erica Christ, Dorothy Cleveland, Loren Niemi, Laura Packer, Richard Rousseau, Sue Searing, and Jim Stowell.

Three of the region’s story organizations - Cheap Theatre, Northlands Storytelling Network, and Story Arts of Minnesota - combined efforts to produce this engaging showcase of spoken word expertise and talent as part of Tellabration!’s international reach.

November 24, 2018, Saturday - Washburn A Mill Tour at Mill City Museum

Time: 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Location: Mill City Museum704 South 2nd Street

Washburn A Mill Tour

Take an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building. A guide will take visitors into the building's many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the building functioned during its peak flour milling years, and the many changes to the building over time. This is the only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building and the only chance to see some of its nonpublic spaces.

Tour highlights include:

  • The dramatic story of the 1878 Washburn A Mill explosion, and the other dangers that mill workers faced on a daily basis
  • "The Octopus," a large machine that directed wheat into nine storage bins
  • The Humphrey Manlift, a vertical conveyor belt that carried workers from floor to floor
  • The Rail Corridor where hundreds of boxcars arrived each day to unload wheat and carry away flour
  • Millstone plaza, originally paved with retired millstones and the location for lunchtime concerts by the Washburn-Crosby employee band in the 1920s
  • Evidence of the three major fires that have damaged the building in 1878, 1928 and 1991
  • The East Engine House, once home to a two-story steam engine, has been remodeled into two classrooms, while preserving the original railroad car pulling machinery

The tour includes no more than 1 mile of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.

Future dates: December 2, 29
