Linda Back McKay book launch: Out of the Shadows, Stories of Adoption & Reunion

What happened to young women in the 1960s when they had to say goodbye forever to their own babies? How did they go on with their lives? Then, when mother and child eventually reunited, what emotions, reactions and realities did they have to deal with? How strong is that initial birth bond? How do families handle the roller coaster relationships of reunions?

Noted author Linda Back McKay explores these questions and more in Out Of The Shadows: Stories of Adoption and Reunion, a collection of true stories about birthmothers who lived through the shame and trauma of an unwed pregnancy and years later were reconnected with the adult child they had placed for adoption.

Linda Back McKay is author of several poetry collections as well as the groundbreaking book, Shadow Mothers: Stories of Adoption and Reunion, which was inspiration for the play, “Watermelon Hill,” produced by the History Theatre in Saint Paul. She is a teaching artist, working with youth and adults. She lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with David McKay. As often as possible, they travel with their Harley-Davidson motorcycle, which is red, because red bikes go faster.
