Class with Nora // This Is Not (just) A Sad Story

Nora McInerny is teaching a 1 day class at The Loft Literary Center!

Everyone has a sad story, but sad stories are rarely only sad. Join memoirist and reluctant grief expert Nora McInerny as she brings her insight, humor and story telling craft to the exploration of stories about the most terrible things in life. Students will learn to use humor, insight and candor as they conquer writing about the most challenging aspects of their own lives and selves.

Using essays from writers like Anne Lamott and Joan Didion, students will explore the multidimensional complexities of living and writing sad stories. How do we deal with our feelings while writing about the most tragic parts our lives? How do we honor our own perspective while writing about others? When does a sad story become tragedy porn and when is it valuable? How do we address the most challenging parts of our selves and our lives with both honesty and empathy?
