May 31, 2016, Tuesday - Marge Barrett Publication Launch at The Loft

Time: 7:00pm

Location: The Loft Literary Center, at Open Book (Performance Hall), 1011 Washington Ave

Marge Barrett Publication Launch

The Loft presents an evening with author Marge Rogers Barrett celebrating the release of her new memoir, Called: The Making & Unmaking of a Nun. The book recounts Barrett’s life growing up in a large Catholic family in Marshall and St. Paul, Minnesota, joining a convent in 1963, leaving, and answering other “calls.”

The launch event will include a conversation with Loft Executive Director Britt Udesen and Barrett about the process of writing this story over a large swath of time, the experience of becoming a nun, a teacher, a wife and mother, a sister caring for family members. The discussion will include excerpts from the book and a Q &A with the audience.

Marge Rogers Barrett is proud to be a part of Minnesota’s literary tradition, graduating with a BA in English from the University of St. Catherine and completing Master’s work in education and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Minnesota. She’s taught in high schools and universities, and for the past ten years, adults in the community—at the Loft Literary Center, the Jewish Community Center, MinnPost, the Collegeville Institute, and workshops in the Cities and around the country. She has published poetry and prose in numerous journals, stories in Dzanc Books’ Best of the Web 2009, the Minnesota Historical Society’s The State We’re In, and a poetry chapbook, My Memoir Dress

There is a $5–$10 suggested admission fee at the door for this event.
