March Picture Book Salon: Wonder Women

"Wonder Women: the Importance of Strong Female Characters in Children's Books"

Children’s books have always included spunky, feisty female characters like Ramona and Beezus Quimby, Jasmine Toguchi, Mya Tibbs, and Harriet the Spy, but is spunky and feisty enough? At our March Picture Book Salon, we’ll discuss the assumptions we make when we think in terms of “girl books” and “boy books,” the effect gender stereotypes have on young readers (and the publishing industry’s puzzling role in perpetuating those stereotypes), and why it’s important to include strong female characters in the books we write.

Aimée Bissonette has a Bachelor’s degree from Colorado State University and a Law degree from the University of Minnesota Law School. Her published picture books include “North Woods Girl,” “Miss Colfax’s Light,” and “Aim for the Skies – Jerrie Mock and Joan Merriam Smith’s Race to Complete Amelia Earhart’s Quest.” https://www.aimeebissonette.com/

The Picture Book Salon meets on the first Monday of each month, in the large classroom on the -->second floor<-- of Open Book (room 203), 7-8:30pm. Suggested donation $5.

Snacks and beverages provided. Please RSVP here or to mollybethgriffin@gmail.com. Find more info about Salon here: http://mollybethgriffin.com/events/

SAVE THE DATE: Our next Salon will take place April 1 and will feature a discussion of "Images of Aging in Picture Books" with Lindsey McDivitt.
