Martin Fröst Plays Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto

One of Mozart’s finest concertos for any instrument and his last instrumental composition, the Clarinet Concerto, was inspired by the talents of clarinetist Anton Stadler and was actually written for the unusual bassett clarinet, a special clarinet championed by Stadler with an extended range in the lower end. SPCO Artistic Partner Martin Fröst performs the concerto in the original version in the most spectacular fashion and conducts the SPCO in the first of Mozart’s final three Symphonies.

Clarinetist, conductor and Sony Classical recording artist Martin Fröst is known for pushing musical boundaries and has been described by The New York Times as having “a virtuosity and a musicianship unsurpassed by any clarinetist—perhaps any instrumentalist—in my memory.” He has appeared with orchestras such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Israel Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Philharmonia Orchestra and Orchestre National de France. In 2017.18 he notably returns to the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and makes his debut with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. He also appears with the NDR Radiophilharmonie, Royal Flemish Philharmonic, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Residentie Orkest.

Fröst will be Chief Conductor of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra starting in the 2019.20 season. Known for artistic collaborations worldwide, this season he continues as Artistic Partner with both the SPCO and Royal Stockholm Philharmonic orchestras, and will also be Artist in Residence at L’Auditiori, Barcelona appearing with the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona I Nacional de Catalunya and performing a number of chamber concerts. These positions follow his success in recent seasons as Artist-in-Residence at the Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Gothenburg Symphony and London’s Wigmore Hall.

In autumn 2017, Fröst is joined by Janine Jansen, Lucas Debargue and Torleif Thedéen to release Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time, his second recording for Sony Classics. Together this season, the quartet will give performances of the work worldwide.
