Norman Borlaug and the Green Revolution
Fee: Free
Noble Peace Prize Laureate Dr. Norman Borlaug (1914-2009) was a plant breeder who created disease-resistant, high-yielding strains of wheat that pulled millions out of starvation around the world. He is often credited with saving more lives than anyone else in history. He is one of only seven people to have won the Nobel Peace Prize, The Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. Yet relatively few know his name. Join Noel Vietmeyer, author of "Our Daily Bread: The Essential Norman Borlaug" for a presentation about the importance of Borlaug's achievements, the Minnesota ties to his story, and the legacy of the green revolution. At the end of the talk Mr. Vietmeyer will sign copies of his book which will be for sale in the museum store.
The event coincides with the 100th anniversary of Borlaug's birth (March 25, 1914). The day before the talk a statue of Borlaug will be unveiled in the National Hall of Statuary in the U.S. Capital. Borlaug will be the first scientist so honored.
