Breakfast with a Preservationist: Why do historic buildings get demolished?

A common saying in historic preservation states “You can’t save them all.”

Thus the topic of the month’s Breakfast with a Preservationist. Two presenters with public experience in historic architecture and city planning will focus on the causes of why important buildings and places are lost by demolition.

Demolition sometimes justifiably occurs within well-practiced procedures by stewards of the preservation movement, such as city planning commissions, heritage preservation commissions, community organizations and other public interest groups. Of course, building often owners play a critical role.

Other circumstances happen quite contrary to the dismay of preservation’s adherents. Building owners and city agencies occasionally mandate demolition without a thorough examination of relevant factors, despite many parts of the public who care about how our heritage is conserved and loved.

And another common saying by preservationists: “Once it’s gone, it’s gone.”

Parking is available in a ramp across the street or along 2nd Street South’s metered spaces. Coffee and bakery will be available, as will the usual great questions and commentary. We stop exactly at 9AM.
