June 14, 2014, Saturday - 1978: An all-night art-making happening (in conjunction with Northern Spark) at MCBA

Time: 9:00pm to Sunday, June 15, 5:30 am

Location: Minnesota Center for Book Arts gallery and studios, and Open Book lobby, 1011 Washington Avenue South

1978:  An all-night art-making happening, presented in coordination with Northern Spark

Minnesota Center for Book Arts brings back 1978 – a true Happening filled with mirror balls, disco music, hands-on screen printing, blacklight paper marbling, and letterpress printing! Pull an Andy Warhol-inspired screen print with Aesthetic Apparatus, experiment with glow-in-the-dark paints in the marbling studio with Suzanne Hughes, and print a cover for MCBA’s Northern Spark Zine — a Fluxus-inspired publication conceived in collaboration with Monica Edwards Larson of Sister Black Press.

And at 3am, come unhinged with Aesthetic Apparatus! Pick a screen, make a stencil, pick a color – screens will come loose and paper will be flying for a free-form, large scale, print-o-rama!

1978 is inspired by the art and anti-art of Fluxus, and presented in coordination with MCBA’s acclaimed exhibition Fluxjob: Purging the World of Bourgeoisie Sickness Since 1963, on display through July 6. Fluxjob is an exploration of contemporary artists who continue to create interdisciplinary anti-art that is ephemeral, inexpensive, and interactive. Three additional coordinated exhibitions will be on view throughout Open Book — Scored, Fluxbox, and 50 Years / 50 Objects. For more information on any of these exhibitions, visit our Current Exhibitions page.

About Northern Spark:

Northern Spark is an all-night arts festival that lights up Minneapolis on June 14, 2014. On the second Saturday in June each summer, tens of thousands of people gather along the Minneapolis riverfront and throughout the city to explore giant video projections, play in temporary installations in the streets, and enjoy experimental performances in green spaces and under bridges. From dusk to dawn the city surprises you: friendly crowds, glowing groups of cyclists, an unexpected path through the urban landscape, the magic of sunrise after a night of amazing art and experiences. Northern Spark is the one-night arts event people talk about for the rest of the year.
